This is a complete red herring! And you expect smart homeschooling parents to chase this?
The only stat that is relevant is comparing **parents** and **adult** guardians driving their children ( properly seat belted) to and from school ( ONLY), as compared to school bus injuries.
And,,,even **if** the school bus was safer, how many of those 17,000 admissions ( and non-emergency room injuries) could have been prevented with adult monitors, crossing guards, swing out bars, more roof exits, non-slippery seat coverings, side bars on the seats, seating only 2 children per seat, video cameras, 2 way communication with the school and police, higher seat backs, non-flammable and non-toxic seat paddings, and testing buses for seat belts in roll over and side impact crashes.
By the way, it is my guess that it is far safer for a child to be properly seat belted in his parent’s car, with his parent driving him exclusively to and from school than it is to be in a school bus! If anything the miles and time driven on the road are SHORTER for the child with his parent! That alone exposes the child to less risk!
The reason we don’t have these stats is that if the government provided them, school bus safety would look as bad as it REALLY is!
Honestly, I can understand where you are coming from. Even when my girls were in school, the last place I wanted them was on a school bus. I rode them and my fears were from my own experiences.
But the big deal on this thread is that someone got offended by the Name of a ping list. The ping went out to a list. It’s not at all about homeschooling or riding a school bus. It’s about a couple of FReepers getting upset because of the name of a ping list.
I’m going with Metmom on this. I wish I had the time to get upset over this kind of stuff.
Personally, I don’t want to hear any more about it.
It would be difficult. Some of the bus drivers just come and drive, they don’t enforce anything. I’ve seen some pretty bad situations, and the bus drivers have clay of feet. No, in reality, it probably wouldn’t work.
