When unemployment is down to 4.5% as it is here in AZ and with illegals leaving in droves, there is no valid reason for not working at something. Yes, there is a core group of unemployables and they will never work. That amounts to about 3% but I don’t think they are in the mix.
Bottom line... get of’n ur arse and get a job!
My husband lost his job of 22 years to a plant moved due to Nafta. He went to school for two years for a welding degree. That field is dried up regionly and now he literally can’t find a job in McDonalds.
Of course I”m sure alot of FR will call him a loser and bum. He has tried Walmart, Home Depot, every fast food restaurant, grocery stores. It’s hopeless in our area and sadly until he has a job, we can’t afford to move. And gas at $3.00 a gallon, can’t afford and $8 job to drive 80 miles commute. We are still trying to make it through and have just cashed in all our savced change for the house note.

You could also just look up any energy service company (Basic, ProPetro, Patterson, Weatherford, Key or any producer Oxy, etc.)
They don’t pay as much as the oil fields, but TDCJ is hiring everyone they can get as prison guards.
Also, the Swift company up north of Amarillo is paying relocation costs for production workers (beef packing)and starting pay is, I believe, over $11 an hour.
It’s not just Midland, there are jobs in West Texas.

What positions is your husband applying for at a grocery store? We’re always hiring in Georgia (and pretty much every state right now). One hint of advice for him—if he’s applying in any “retail” or “fast food” place that has one of those electronic apps, answer every question as you just love talking to people, being around people, never get angry, etc. So many people are DQed for scores on those test who would otherwise be a good candidate. Also, he may look overqualified. Tell him to try applying for mgmt instead of just general (either a department head or assistant store manager).
Based on the number of folks driving Escalades and other high priced automobiles around my neck of the woods while grocery shopping on food stamps or on Access cards, I'd say the unemployment or welfare checks are more or less to augment the income from under the table work or illegal dealings.

I was recently in Missouri, Texas, and Florida and I saw the same thing there. Oh, and by the way, I did not have a job when I moved out here, but I managed. I did not wait for someone to take care of me.
