Obama’s mom is dead. But his very white maternal grandma is very much alive and living in Hawaii. Given the importance of pushing his “blackness” in primary states where Blacks form an important segment of Democreatic primary votes, she has been kept out of sight. But she’ll be let out for the general election. Grandma and Granpa (now dead) largely raised Obama while mom flitted about going to grad schools.

I have questions about the basic honesty of Obama’s ad bemoaning his mother’s unfortunate situation. I have a few questions I would ask him, given the chance:

1. If she were in the States (say Hawaii) and was between jobs, having been covered in the previous job (implied by the ad), why wouldn’t an intelligent PhD be smart enough to secure coverage under COBRA?

2. Obama only refers to the fact that she worried about her bills and whether she was covered or not. Did she get coverage? Did she get treatment? Was the treatment paid for, and by whom?

3. If she was not living in the United States and living in Indonesia at the time her cancer was discovered, why should the US health system be faulted?

4. To what degree should American citizens be required to pay for the choices (in this case, a rather exotic adult life spent in many various locations and countries)?

I am not critizing her choices, btw. We do have our freedom, after all, to choose whatever lifestyle we want. I’m just asking why should I, or you, have to subsidize part of it?
