At 5 a.m., Rivera remained barricaded inside the home, McDonnell said.

Officials said it wasn’t the first time he had been involved with the police.

“We’ve had some dealings with him,” said Lt. Tom Smart with the West Valley Division gang unit. “He’s got some gang ties, a rapsheet and some mental health issues.”

A female cousin of Rivera’s who declined to give her name said he wasn’t a gang member and didn’t use drugs. About 6 a.m., she asked police if she could negotiate with Rivera, but they wouldn’t let her, she said.

The officer killed was a subordinate of mine very early on in his career...

My sympathies in the loss of your "brother".

BTW Two members of the Long Beach Police Department were just in my store - in uniform - and neither was wearing a black band over his shield.

Is it just members of the same department who do that?

Thank you, I'll pass it on.

Generally, that practice is limited to the department of the fallen officer until the funeral. This is a practice, not a policy. There are so many agencies in So. Cal. that they'd be wearing them much of the time.

Too close for comfort. Gangs are really taking over the valley. I grew up just across the freeway from this area. Sad.

What a thought!

God bless all these brave souls.

Dopers not usually this dangerous. Stupid, which can be dangerous, but not tactically proficient. Not gangsters either.

Appears likely the suspect did have gang connections, not to mention he was one dangerous SOB.

Only good thing here is the SOB is dead.

Those guys in the second picture down look like they’re working for the TSA (Thousands Standing Around). Swap uniforms and give them each a shovel to lean on and they’d look like the average road crew.

Pretty f'n stupid comment from you.

They're buddy and co-worker had his life ended today by some ruthless, murdering son of a bitch. They're other co-worker just got the entire bottom of his jaw blown away, scattering and embedding bullet and bone fragments all over his head and neck.

I'd pay good money to see you walk among that group, and shoot your mouth off.

Why, are you assuming that they have felonious tendencies???? That's not very respectful. You should be ashamed for your assumptions.

...and so naturally...being a “momma” you thought the most sensible thing for you to do was come along here, butt in, and play up your mothering act pissing contest?

*laughing*

It is not advisable, “mommadoo3”, to venture unsolicited opinions. You should spare yourself the embarrassing discovery of their exact value to your listener.

Please go nag someone who might actually listen to you without laughing at you.

How ironic...You mock grieving cops at time like this, then you cry about rules? You're the same type that would be first to call the cops if you ever thought your safety was in question.

You're disgusting and not worth any further exchange.

Wrong, I know that all that cops are there for is to put an outline around your body and maybe catch the person responsible if you’re lucky. Cops don’t stop crime, they just respond to it. Be self reliant, and take advantage of the 2nd amendment, until the cops come to take your guns away from you just like they did in New Orleans.

No. Two San Francisco PD cops I shoot with were wearing mourning bands this morning, as was my partner, a retired SFPD inspector.

The general guidelines for mourning bands- which can vary by agency, different uniform regulations, and different states- are as follows:

General orders for proper protocol of wearing mourning bands:

For an Officer or retired Officer of this department: From the time of death until midnight on the 14th day after the death

For an officer from this state/region: From the time of death until midnight on the day of the funeral, except for-

Funeral attendees and out-of-region officers: While attending funeral

National Peace Officers Memorial Day, 15 May annually: from 0001 hours until 2359 hours.
