I’m not letting McCain off the hook for anything. You asked me who I meant, and I told you. Cochrane should not have said that publicly.

Is Cochrane supposed to cover up McCain's insanity instead of warn the American people about it?

Neither you nor I know what caused Cochran to say it, but I have a good guess: McCain yelled at Cochran at some point and Cochran took offense, and now he’s exacting his revenge. Hardly proof of insanity.

"He (McCain) is erratic. He is hotheaded. He loses his temper, and he worries me."

And those are his good qualities.

And I guess the words that he yelled are having consequences. Words have consequences.

Why do you think it will hurt McCain? Shouldn't it help him? He didn't get where he is today by playing nice with conservatives. If Reid was complaining that McCain yelled at liberals instead of conservatives, would that hurt McCain or help him?

I’m not sure where you are going with this, but I do know that Cochran’s words will be repeated by Democrats thousands of times between now and November, and this will hurt not only McCain but Republicans down the ballot too.

Answer: as far as necessary to sit in the Oval Office.

Add an "h" to the word "sit" and you'll have it.

But what I asked you is why would McCain's yelling at Cochrane hurt his chances to become president since he didn't get to where he is today by playing nice with Republicans.

Well, assuming there was yelling, because it caused Cochrane to say these things about his temperament, which will be very damaging in the General Election. I thought I made that clear.

> Thad Cochran is known as one of the most diplomatic and courtly Senators - if not THE most. He’s the furthest thing from a bomb-thrower. He is very well respected and made Newsweek’s “Top 10 Senators” list. <

Absolutely. I’ve been acquainted with Sen. Cochran and his family for almost 50 years. There’s no person in political life with greater integrity.

For that reason, I almost went thru the roof the other day when McCain was questioned on TV about colleagues like Cochran and former Sen. Santorum who have been criticizing him in public. McCain had the gall to say something to the effect that these men were “not among the most respected” members of the Senate. How long will this lowlife be able to get away with such outrages?

I don’t understand your premise because I’d be more likely to want to vote for a candidate if he yelled at liberals a lot. I yell at liberals all the time and I wouldn’t be less inclined to vote for Dick Cheney because he told Patrick Leahy to “F&*@ Off”. I don’t think that hurt Cheney a bit.

With that being the case, why would McCain's burst of passion hurt his chances? Why not just save us the time and admit that you want conservatives to cover up McCain's hostility towards conservatives?

Because it is the actual words, spoken by Republican Cochran, repeated over and over in the campaign by the Democrats, that will be the problem. The Democrats aren’t going to explain that they simply reflect McCain’s hostility toward conservatives (even if true); they are just going to repeat Cochran’s words, word for word, and this will be enough to seriously damage McCain and all Republicans on the ballot, by making McCain seem crazy.

What’s more, Cochran’s words do not simply imply McCain’s “passion” in his “hostility toward conservatives,” as you say, but rather make him out to be loony tunes. Passion can be good; loony tunes cannot be.

If you think that this quote will be what turns the tide against McCain, then you know nothing about John McCain, the MSM or the Democrats.

John McCain will sink his own campaign just by being John McCain. How is he gonna do any better than Bob Dole did, when at least Dole didn’t pee on his conservative base?

Another thread goes into some additional detail:

"In endorsing Romney, Republican Sen. Thad Cochran of Mississippi, who has known McCain for more than three decades, said his choice was prompted partly by his fear of how McCain might behave in the Oval Office.

“The thought of his being president sends a cold chill down my spine,” Cochran said about McCain. “He is erratic. He is hotheaded. He loses his temper, and he worries me.”

“He [McCain] would disagree about something and then explode,” said former Sen. Bob Smith, a fellow Republican who served with McCain on various committees. “[There were] incidents of irrational behavior. We’ve all had incidents where we have gotten angry, but I’ve never seen anyone act like that.”

Defending his bill to give amnesty to illegal aliens, McCain unleashed a tirade on Sen. John Cornyn, R-Texas, who had voiced concerns about the number of judicial appeals illegal immigrants could file under the proposed legislation.

“F*** you!” McCain said to his fellow senator. “I know more about this than anybody else in the room!” McCain shouted.

“People who disagree with him get the f*** you,” said former Rep. John LeBoutillier, a New York Republican who had an encounter with McCain when he was on a POW task force in the House. “I think he is mentally unstable and not fit to be president.”

Andrew H. “Andy” Card Jr., President Bush’s former chief of staff, told me he has observed McCain’s outbursts.

“Sometimes he was pretty angry, but I felt as if he was putting on a show,” Card said. “I don’t know if it was an emotional eruption or it was for effect," Card said.

Democrat Paul Johnson, the former mayor of Phoenix, saw McCain’s temper up close. “His volatility borders in the area of being unstable,” Johnson has said. “Before I let this guy put his finger on the button, I would have to give considerable pause.” "

One of the advantages of having McCain as president would be that the president WOULD NOT BE Dingy Harry from Stoplight, Nevada. Now THAT would send chills down my spine.
