I don't know if this article has been posted before, but it's worth reading again IMO.

Well reasoned and well written.

This difference in worldview is at the heart of the culture wars. One side believes the meaning of human sexuality is primarily individual. Sex is a private activity whose purpose is individual pleasure and satisfaction. The alternative view is that sex is primarily a social activity. Sex builds up community, starting with the spousal relationship and adding on from there.

Excellent article and best jewel in the summary.

One side believes...Sex is a private activity whose purpose is individual pleasure and satisfaction.

That would be the dateless side.

Sexual activity has two natural, organic purposes: procreation and spousal unity.

Not sure about unity thing, but the purpose of sex is to impede reproduction.

organic purposes: procreation and spousal unity

I know the English language can do better than this. I don’t hear one romantic or attractive thing in this style of language. It may be well reasoned, but beauty’s stylistic absence in a discussion of such powerful realities is a nonstarter. Business language just doesn’t capture the richness present in such human experiences, unless such human experiences have become mere business.

Um, I think you might be thinking of something else, or maybe are doing it wrong.

Aren’t you supposed to post pictures on threads like this?

"Spousal unity" means simply that sex builds attachments between husband and wife."

I disagree. It may build attachment, but it is not limited to "husband and wife". There is nothing "organic" about things like sacraments and interpersonal contracts. The author is inserting his own (probably religious) biases into the argument unnecessarily. He can simply write, "Sex can build attachment between any two emotional beings, and that is very likely one of its designed purposes", without injecting his own opinions and distracting from a valid point.

You’re not thinking beyond the popular (and false) view.

Doesn’t impede mean to block?

I’m going to read the article again. I think I’m missing the point. However, I do agree with your post.

Yes, impede means to block to a lessor degree than to bring to as halt. Here it means: “Be a hindrance or obstacle to.”

That’s what I thought but it doesn’t make sense to me since procreation usually happens with sex or is one of the main purposes of sex. I really have to read the article again and the posts.

I was so tired of reading/discussing politics, this primary, this election that I thought this topic would be fun. The article was so business-like it sucked all the fun out of it.

Most species reproduce asexually. In most of those few species that do reproduce sexually, the male and female do not associate except during sexual reproduction.

I sorta know that, at least about it not being a part of intimacy/expressing love since animals aren’t humans. But the article is about human sexuality from what I’ve read, and I’ve read it twice so far and it’s still too business-like and not a fun read. IMO.

“I know the English language can do better than this. I don’t hear one romantic or attractive thing in this style of language.”

Your sentiments are very much in keeping with your moniker :-) How about
O my love is like a red, red rose,
That’s newly sprung in June:
O my love is like the melody,
That’s sweetly played in tune.
- Robert Burns
