An F-16 Fighting Falcon sits ready to deploy at a moment's notice at the 162nd Fighter Wing's Alert Detachment at Davis-Monthan Air Force Base, Ariz. Arizona Air National Guardsmen from Tucson will fly this aircraft and others to secure the airspace over Super Bowl XLII. (U.S. Air Force photo/Master Sgt. David Neve) |
Talk about your box seats.
BTW, how much is this costing the taxpayers? Seems the NFL should be footing some of the costs.
No idea of the cost in $$$$ but it’s better than the book “Black September” going from fiction to reality.
I had that same question in my mind. Well, I guess the cost of a terrorist attack would be far greater.
The Giants are going to need all the help they can get to beat the Patriots. And I don’t even like the Patriots, but we must be realists.
Do you have Super Bowl Tickets?
Seems kind of silly yo bing in fighters from Davis-Monthan Air Force Base when Luke AFB The largest fighter bas in the free world, is three miles away. There are over 100 f-16’s at Luke.
The best there are. Right on my living room TV.
Close to the refreshments, no crowds, no waiting in line for the bathroom, and no crazy drivers to contend with afterwards.
Your right, beer is cheaper at my house!!
Just because there are F-16s at Luke doesn’t mean the aircraft and pilots there are equipped and trained for this particular mission. It sounds as if the D-M unit’s mission is exactly this, air patrol over the US.
My thought is the Arizona Air Guard gets this because the Superbowl is taking place in their state. At Luke, there are not, to my knowledge, any AZ Air Guard operational squadrons. At Luke AFB Homepage Super Bowl XLII FAQs it says:
What is Luke's participation in the Super Bowl?
Over the past several months, Luke has been represented in various Federal Working Groups to facilitate response procedures as appropriate. Luke is postured to respond at moment's notice based upon current response plans and mutual aid agreements with local law enforcement, medical and disaster response organizations with our surrounding community. Additionally, many of our Luke personnel are working as Super Bowl volunteers or paid workers in an unofficial capacity.
Are Luke jets conducting combat air patrols or a flyover for the Super Bowl?
Luke's jets will not be performing a flyover nor be conducting any combat air patrols over the greater Phoenix/Glendale area. The F-16s of the Air National Guard's 162nd Fighter Wing at Tucson International Airport have been tasked by Air Forces North, the air branch of NORAD, with the responsibility for combat air patrols, to keep the skies safe over Arizona.
I hope they are armed if they plan on flying near the border.
I gues it would matter depending on who was winning at the time of the attack
Go Raiders
F16s are pretty — but for sheer scary looks the Warthog is my pick, low, slow and with the new sensor package, able to kill a single truck if need be.
CAS = Death on Call.
Good question, especially since Luke Air Force Base is only six and a half miles away from the stadium. You could sit a couple of F16's on the runway and still have plenty of time to scramble them if you need to.

Um, no. It doesn’t.
Ok, they pay for it and then deduct the amount from the taxes that are generated from the event. How’s that?
I don’t think active military are permitted to do a guard duty in CONUS.
