The numbers on the total abortions in the US is not complete or credible because:

1. They are based on compilations done by the Alan Guttmacher Institute, which is a wholly owned subsidiary of Planned Parenthood

2. Some states do not report the numbers of abortions at all—I believe California is one of them, and CA is a very large state.

The real question is:

After 35 years of abortion on demand, sex education, AIDS, free condoms, dozens of new STDs instead of three or so,easily obtained and efficient birth control methods and products flooding the market, all those COSMO magazines telling woman everything they ever needed to know about sex,and every child supposed to be a wanted child:

Why are there still more than 1.2 million abortions a year?

True, but it’s important to point out that it’s not down because there are less abortionists, but because women are waking up to other options and information!

I understand your statement, and I wish I could share your optimism.

But let’s put it into context.

The pool of child bearing age women is shrinking. Why? Because the baby boomer generation, which made up the first wave of women committing abortions, has advanced 35 years and few are getting pregnant due to age(i.e.—last baby boomer woman is 43 now, most are in their fifties or close to it by now). They made up the biggest demographic of women having abortions.

The most abortions reported in a year was about 1.8 million, I believe, sometime in the late 1980s or so, and it has been going down gradually since then.

If you have 1.2 million abortions spread over a smaller demographic of women having children, you are not seeing a decrease in the number of abortions at all, or a small one at best.

It is great that the number of abortion providers is decreasing—this is due to the last two generations of doctors retiring and new doctors being loath to take on such a practice—and that is a cause to be celebrated.

Another thing to realize is that the quality of the doctors doing the abortions is usually low—they are the in the bottom third of the medical classes, because the better doctors shy away from doing abortions.

But let’s not confuse numbers with the real issue:

In 35 years we have murdered over 50 million children. Some of them, if they lived, would have had their own children by now. So we are looking at perhaps 65 million missing people from America.

Now it’s no wonder why we are not supposed to fighting against illegal immigration.

RU 486 abortions don’t count in their thinking.

Unfortunately, they are only counting operative abortions. The number of chemically induced abortions are not included in this number.

and as several have pointed out, RU486 doesn’t figure either.

*sigh*

Yes, the point about RU-486 is a good one.

How much of the decrease is due to the availability of the morning after pill now? Are these cases counted in the stats for the number of abortions.

How many prescriptions are being written for these pills a year now, and how many times do they end a pregnancy before the need for a surgical intervention.

It could well be that much of the apparent drop in the numbers is due simply to the use of another method.
