Oh, that’s too bad. I was hoping for another good debate performance...although, I understand if it’s to spend time with his mom.
Ain't that the truth. But it's entertaining to watch.
Thompson should make some obligatory appearances in Florida, and focus on the other Southern States.
What if FR did not “endorse” any of the rest of them?
That's not saying many won’t individually pick their poison from among what’s left, but endorsements are not exactly required of a conservative website when there is no conservative to endorse.
Anyone who has read here at all over the last few months knows the truth. Apart from Fred, there is NO consensus that will take place among the base. A majority of the base have a certain candidate or candidates they will not vote support under any circumstances. You’ll see among the posts that those candidates vary by the individual.
This is precisely why we needed a candidate with a conservative record that most would find acceptable if not preferable. If we lose Thompson, there really is no one else who can unite the party.
Perhaps you may not have noticed, but this is what has happened in every contest so far. The Author is not advocating open contests, the first of which will be Florida. He is decrying this fact, and says, as you are, that it should not be happening.
“FNC reported a few minutes ago that Fred has pulled out of the debate this week.”
Not on their website yet... Interesting.
I'm just waiting for a crown of laurels to be placed on Mcpain's brow. Then I'll know for sure FR has had a nervous breakdown.
FReepers often bemoan the fact that many African Americans vote for the donks, even when the donks take them for granted. At what point do we, as small government and/or social conservatives, say that we will no longer be taken for granted? At what point do we force the GOP to earn our votes?
Personally, I’ve had more than enough of political relativism. From this point forward every candidate must meet a minimum absolute threshhold on my most important issues in order to earn my vote (e.g., they must be 51% or more for smaller government). If there are multiple candidates in the race that meet or exceed that threshhold, I will then compare their relative merits.
The GOP has proved definitively that it will not stick with conservatism on principle. So, the only way I can see to get them back to where we need to be is to force the issue by withholding my vote.
I doubt it’s the official position yet. Thompson campaign aides are telling reporters that Fred won’t attend the debate. So there is always the chance that the aides are in some way wrong or Fred reconsiders his decision.

I heard it with my own ears - posted to breaking
Also his staffers have gone with half-salaries all month, and a big announcement is due tomorrow.
What’s hilarious is that Ron Paul will be in this campaign longer than Fred.
Jim Garaghty at NRO reports that Thompson is still in Tennessee at the hospital with his mother, and he had not made any decision on the campaign front as he tends to her. Staff is being told to plan on business as usual tomorrow.
I think Fred was gaining momentum and without the indi voters running up the RINO’s he stands the test from Real Republican voters in Real Republican Primarys.
Fred should not pull out. WE MUST have a true conservative voice as a counter to the progressive Rinocrats we are told are our ONLY CHOICES!
I, for one, am tired of having to settle for 2nd or 3rd choice EVERY election because the pundits say we can’t win with (blah) and we have no chance with (blah) and we can settle for blah blah blah.
Fred, you have to be reading this. Don’t let the MSM discourage your candidacy with their tactics of omission and promoting pseudo conservatives.
We know you are the REAL DEAL FRED! It is clear there are no clear choices in the GOP which means the race is wide open! The MSM is trying to mislead conservatives like sheeple and we know better what a REAL CONSERVATIVE IS!
I agree it looks bad for keeping Fred in the race, but I won’t apologize for keeping hope alive until we know for sure.
Indeed, they need to give it a rest and get a life.
A brokered convention will put the GOP back in touch with what representation the supporters are asking for.
The GOP has turned it’s back on us the voters and it’s time to make it clear we are tired of being ignored.
And if the GOP isn’t the party we thought it was supposed to be, we damn sure can find us a 3rd party candidate worth voting for.
I hope Fred stay’s in.
Carl Cameron said tonight that Fred’s staff has been on half pay since 1/1/08
I don’t think he really wanted to do this from the beginning. We can’t make him do what he doesn’t have the heart for.
