But they will lose money doing that from the write off. Now with a ban coming they will get more tax dollars since these bulbs cost more. Funny how that works.

With all the electricity usage savings, governments are going to lose tax revenue from their utility taxes, so will have to raise those tax rates to compensate.

One more comment...

When I was a kid, I got my temperature taken using a mercury thermometer. Those contained about 500 mg of mercury (pdf). My mom stuck 500 mg of mercury up my butt.

Now there's grown men and women fretting and sniffing about light bulbs with five mg of mercury. You'd have to stick one hundred light bulbs up your butt just to equal the exposure I--and many of you--got as a child.

Think about it. A hundred light bulbs. In your butt. Good night everyone.

If this does to light bulbs what they did to toilets, it might be enough to get Congress switched back. Seriously, this could be enough to run against the current Congress in any district of the country. Imagine having to replace every chandelier or overhead light in your house within the next three years. Imagine a four-pack of bulbs costing $60. Imagine never being able to dim a light or get one bright enough to be able to comfortable read. They can't be made in 3-ways or used with timers.

This should be enough to raise people's consciousness about what an out-of-control Congress can do.

It will be interesting to see where the White House gets the bulbs to outfit its hundreds of chandelier lights and sconces. It is an historic landmark and certain conversions may not be possible—but wherever are THEY going to get the bulbs for the East Room chandeliers?

GE and Phillips are going to be the big winners because these are the most expensive bulbs they make. Some are $15 each! And we all look so good under fluorescent lights.

Will someone explain to me just why we are paying these idiots to waste their time on this kind of asinine stupidity?

Or why Bush is signing these silly things?

Or why an American law is ceremoniously transported a couple blocks in a Japanese made car?

Ye GADS!!! Sometimes I just want to just give up and go get drunk.

GOD BLESS GW BUSH. I don’t doubt in 10 years he will be judged a good to great president...despite your feelings.

What are you, about ten years old?

My GOODNESS the animosity towards President Bush from you is surprising.

I have two sons in the military that believe he is an excellent Commander in Chief. That should tell you I am a bit over 10 years old as you implied.

I also believe he is an excellent President; I like Presidents that do not read daily polls to determine policy. Bush was elected to do a tough job; it is refreshing seeing someone do the job despite the whining from the children posing as “adults” in America.

Bush was elected to do a tough job;...

He's failed miserably. He's grown govt. to the highest levels in history at the highest rate. His war in Iraq, I think, will prove to be a failure in what he tried to accomplish.

Conservatism under him has all but died.

He invited, and they came, millions of illegals to invade our country and he's sat on his hands while they did. He's upheld the conviction of people trying to defen the U.S. against invasion.

Really, does the future of America seem more secure under Bush? It doesnt' to me.

Fortunately, incadescents have long shelf lives. Stock up, stock up. Later, travel to China and buy more. Fight the Power.

Let's not get all Rachel Carson here. Dose makes the poison, and a broken CFL probably isn't going to poison you unless you snort the contents. An industrial accident at the factory? Maybe. A butterfingers moment standing on a chair? Probably not.

You know what the most dangerous part of this whole deal is?

The increasing encroachment of the Gov't passing laws that mandate what we shall/shall not buy/use in our private homes - and the control of private industry...That is NOT free capitalism.

A few people get this - it's Creeping Communism. It's what Shrillary and gang intend for this country - and even a lot of pubbie sheeple are swallowing the cover rationale and falling in lock step...

"Let's not swallow" the Commie scheme

From the section just above the snip I posted. These are the tools recommended, not the procedures, which are above.

“NOTE: these instructions also apply to spills from other sources, if the amount spilled is less than or similar to the amount in a thermometer (see specific information above about how to clean up broken fluorescent lamps)”
