Probably scared to death of the CIA guys over at Langley. Shouldn't be though ~ all a bunch of Democrat pukes.

I'd suggest that this is the sort of mess that can and will be taken to federal district court for being in violation of several civil rights laws.

No.

But South Lakes has major campaign going on, for example at the Fairfax Underground, telling everyone that the news stories about the school aren’t true. People opposed to sending thier kids there are called racists, bigots, ignorant, etc.

Also, they have made constant references to the fact that Cho Seung-Hui who committed the murders at VA Tech, went to Westfield. Therefore, Westfield must be a bad school, with bad kids who bullied the kid, etc, etc,.

Me and my husband went to private schools, so we didn’t have to deal with any of this bs.

On the bright side, this can only benefit the Republicans, as another poster has pointed out.:) Although Reston is pretty hardcore liberal, and I suspect the parents would just as soon throw their own children under the bus than vote against a Dem.

Hope so.

A lawyer who represents the county has said that if we tried to take this to court, by the time we got through the process, our kids would already be happy at South Lakes.

Here’s something funny. At the fake public meeting last week the school board was hiding out in a room somewhere and their speeches were televised to all the classrooms where the parents were sitting. After the school finished their pathetic nonsense, the facilitators took over.

The county's attorney forgot two very important facts. One is that VIRGINIA is a designated state in the federal civil rights statutes (with a well known history for playing games with districting/redistricting to screw blacks and/or other minorities). And the second thing is that violating some of those laws is a federal felony sort of thing.

I would imagine that lawyer himself is subject to charges if it comes to that, and it will.

Remember, Fairfax county is remarkably diverse. I see no reason why all the Asians and Africans in the Eastern and Southern districts should be at all discomfited by redistricting parceled out solely for the benefit of a couple of white people in Reston.

That's just a start ~ we can do it the Hispanic or African-American route just as easily.

Reston is planned but Fairfax County doesn't turn on the place, nor do most of us care what happens to them.

Hey, maybe they used a bad plan?

The virtual classroom is fine, yes. One of my daughters was sick and had to take many of her classes on line.

But, we’re talking about physical schools. The kids who will be bused to South Lakes will be moving from schools that offer AP in classrooms to a school which does not offer AP.

No. Just to the north of PWC. While PWC has taken a strong stance against extending any benefits to illegal aliens, the Brie and white wine set on the northern bank of the Occoquan River are much more sympathetic.

Looks like their chickens are coming home to roost.

Also like that fine demonstration of democracy in action at the school meeting with the facilitators only allowing them to vote on which redistricting plan they supported and silencing the dissenters. Got to wonder how many votes “None of the above” would have gotten.

True statement - but my daughter will tell you that she considers the virtual AP classes to be better than some of the on-site teachers. The exception would be Chemistry and Physics. Those were better at her school. But the English, Psych and a couple of histories were much better on line

In surprised that South Lakes is considered under enrolled. We were just there last month for a softball game and there are tons and tons of classroom trailers outside. Normally you don't see those in under enrolled schools, but in crowded ones.

Virtual Virginia High School.
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

Great idea!

Let’s shut every government high school indoctrination camp down and all children could homeschool via the Virtual Virginia High School. Hey! As you stated, the tuition is free and **every** student would have access to **every** Advanced Placement Course.

It’s possible those trailors are there because of the 50 million dollar renovation the school board approved to clean up the school.

I teach with the Virtual School in Georgia. Those virtual AP classes are tough to master.

What they don’t tell you, and this will affect the redistricting, is for each student enrolled in the Virtual Schools, the home school looses an FTE count.

So, if a bunch of students enroll in the Virtual school, the school will be back to square one.

It is nice to sit in your house, at your desk and work at your leisure in the Virtual Schools.:)

For decades Fairfax has built super-sized buildings (Chantilly – space for 2,625 students; Hayfield 3,225; Lake Braddock 4,075; Mt Vernon 2,550; Robinson 4,100; South County 2,700; and Westfield 3,100) Some of these buildings house grades 7-12; others only grades 9-12. One of the large schools in this particular study, Westfield, had 3,171 students, grades 9-12, enrolled on September 30th of this year

Over the last few years the total school population numbers have remained about the same. Countrywide, “High school capacity will exceed enrollment by approximately 2,915 student spaces in the 2007-08 school year. Projections indicate high school capacity will exceed membership by 4,940 student spaces in the 2011-12 school year.”

When this mess started the school system said it was moving kids from overcrowded high schools to one that is under-enrolled. However, the schools around South Lakes are no longer projected to be severely overcrowded.

Does this mean redistricting will stop? NO! After just adding an addtion to one of the large schools named above, one day recently FCPS decided that high schools should only have about 2,000 students. Here are excerpts from the handout distributed at the first meeting held with the parents:

“Impact on Students When Schools Are Over-Enrolled
• Competition is fierce
– Limited number of openings on the dance team and cheerleading squads.
– For example, only 20 students can compete on the cheerleading competition team.

• Football doesn’t usually cut, however,
- Only the very best actually get the opportunity to play on the field during games.
– There are 47 seniors on one high school’s football team; fewer than half are starting.

• Over capacity crowds for football games raise significant safety concerns.
– For example, at the last Chantilly/Westfield game there were over 8,000 people in a stadium that was built to hold 5,000.”

Last Saturday the Westfield Bulldogs won the Virginia State Football Championship. Do you think any of those 47 seniors wishes he was playing at a smaller school where he could get more playing time?

Gee, what a shame that too many people want to watch high school football! So now the Fairfax County school system is going to move some of these students out of Westfield.

[By the way, the school system does not want to give out numbers about race, but the percentage of students at Westfield on Free and Reduced price Meals will probably decrease as well the number of student with Limited English Proficiency. The “more diverse” students live in the areas most likely to be redistricted.]

No, none of this makes any sense to me either.

They emptied out the nuthouses and scattered the residents throughout the system because the houses became too unruly and too expensive; now they are emptying out the projects and scattering the gangbangers throughout the system for the same reasons with the likely same consequences.

Welcome to the new order.
