I am a P-3 Orion pilot (Although I am currently in Fallujah, Iraq with the marines on an IA). The P-3 community has an identical mission to the nimrod and we have identical problems with old aircraft. I called NAS Jacksonville yesterday and I think they told me that there are three working aircraft on the entire base. P-3s are not doing so well.

The P-3 proves you can keep an airframe flying almost indefinitely, for sure.

The successor to the Nimrod is already under construction. It will be the Doofus MKI.
