There is a difference in quality, but we all have to pass the same building inspections, so, other than cosmetic differences which anyone can see, for all practical purposes the differences in quality are irrelevant.
The current building codes are such, that with proper maintenance these houses will stand for 150 years. That’s stupid, of course, but that’s what the anonymous guy behind some nameless desk in DC thought was a good idea. Never mind that it adds 50 to $100,000 to the price of the house. No one will want to live in these houses in another 50-75 years at most. Just look back to houses built in the 40s or 50s.
The illegals situation is horrible. My path is really set. Hire illegals and continue in business, or quit.
The folk’s upthread talking about avoiding restaurants and other businesses are correct in spirit, but dead wrong when it comes to American business owner’s survival.
We have a choice; slave labor, or quit and try to find a job. Even that is fraught with danger. When American subs are undercut by such wide margins by illegals, there aren’t even jobs to be had.
The slaves are coming for YOUR jobs too. And at a blinding rate. Five years ago, I NEVER thought I’d be faced with this.
Building inspections only that you paid a price to the city, county, local gov't and presumably all is o.k.

BOCA codes if adopted by the local government serve a purpose and I understand that. The issue I have is with building inspectors' themselves. If you suck up to them they barely look and place their stamp of approval. If they don't like you--look out you are in for a run for your money. At least that is what we see where we live. I grant you trends change but I can tell you we live in a house over 100 years old. We did a complete remodel. Our old house is structurally sound and in a very mature old neighborhood. I really dislike throw-away.

Yes, I agree with this statement also. It is spirit only. Just like all the patriots that rah rah the troops while at the same time pray their kids will not to join. :(

I agree and can't understand why Republican's do not address small business and Americans who want to work and their problems. We are not talking about people that want a free ride. We all want a decent wage. All the union harping and such makes me sick. Before NAFTA and the other trade agreements and outsourcing we all had purchasing power and no one was complaining about the cost of health care. There are always going to be people who can make only brooms but willing American workers should not be expected to get a passport and go to a third world country to make a living or be forced on welfare. I am truly in limbo as I do not profess to understand the Republican platform in this day and age, the elitism and power of big business that is going on and globalization anymore. All I know is the Dems rob me blind.

And if anyone doesn't believe this they need to think again. Along with the government is going to be coming for their 401K's, retirement or anything else they can levy a tax on to assure we (the common willing American people) do not get ahead. God, help us.
I have no reason to believe that any of the inspectors here are on the take in any manner. We’re in a conservative area, and while a little smooth talk can get the inspector to go a little easy from time to time, but there isn’t much give.
I may have overstated how much the code itself adds to the cost of the house. At one time I tried to make an estimate of what all the ‘enviromental’ stuff added to the cost (as in higher lumber prices because of limits on logging etc) and that where that number came from, not just a result of strict codes.

I thing the figures are insane, and I have never noticed a problem like that in the real world.
There are jobs I won’t do and jobs that I won’t bid on and parts of my business that I have lost because illegals took over those areas.

It will stop you from spreading the lie that a homeowner cannot require people to show ID to come on to his property, I took that from a contractor’s site of actions that every customer and consumer should take.
On other threads I have made even better recommendations, but an intelligent person should get enough information from post 52 to figure it out.
In general, tell every bidder that you are on an illegal alien crusade and to consider that any one that works at your house better have a billfold full of good old American identification that can satisfy you, or else be advised to not submit the bid.
Some how I am able to deal with this problem, it does not overwhelm me.

With the change in the housing market, combined with the exploding influx of higher skilled illegals, I am now in a bind. Practically everyone is using significant slave labor.
Unless something is done to stop the invasion, chances are near 100% that guys like you will have a real challange. Just ask the American subcontractors around here.
