While I can appreciate that there are many back home who are just as dedicated, (and I am grateful for them) I can't go along with "just as in the trenches if not more so." Not unless you've spent the summer regularly visting an old Iraqi government building with the power cutting off and disabling the A/C, in full battle-rattle in 125-degree heat, climbing several sets of stairs and just getting used to being soaked with sweat and covered with dust all day. Or getting shot at a few times or having mortars go off so close to you that you can taste the fear and your heart remains in your throat for some time afterwards. Or living in a tent for months with several other people, walking through the fine sand to the bathroom or makeshift showers. Or taking "bottled water" showers sometimes when the water is off for one reason or another. Or eating MREs for days when the supply lines get clogged due to violence.
Oh, I'm not complaining. I signed up for it. But that is what being "in the trenches" is all about. And that's just me. Lots of our troops have dealt with much rougher situations than that. On a regular basis.
And after eating the MREs the supply lines ain't all that’s clogged!
sorry...
History demonstrates the opposite.
All we know about Goldwater is that he talked tough in 1964, and by 1975 he was a mushmouthed liberal.
would have been infinitely better than LBJ
Not a very high bar.
Of course, he ran his 1964 campaign as if he intended to fail - he never even came within striking range of LBJ's numbers. Mondale ran a more successful campaign for the popular vote than Goldwater.
No, it's actually a matter of documented fact.
He abandoned the embattled Nixon and told him he would vote with the Democrats. He made disparaging comments about our war effort while US troops were in harm's way. He endorsed Ford instead of Reagan. He came out in favor of sodomy in the military.
Whenever he was faced with a serious choice, he went the candyass way.
Those are the facts.
It isn't my opinion that he abandoned Nixon. He actually abandoned Nixon.
It isn't my opinion that he badmouthed the US war effort while our troops were in harm's way. He actually badmouthed the US war effort while our troops were in harm's way.
It isn't my opinion that he endorsed Ford over Reagan. He actually endorsed Ford over Reagan.
It isn't my opinion that he supported the normalization of sodomy in the military. He actually supported the normalization of sodomy in the military.
Those are the facts.
If it is your opinion that these facts demonstrate him to be some kind of tough guy instead of, as you put it, "a pussy" then you are entitled to that opinion.
But I doubt many people reviewing these facts would share your opinion.
I'm not going to call them 'cultists', but I will call them dedicated. My lady and I drove to Florida for a week, and on the way down, I only saw one bumper sticker, and it was for Paul. Mind you, we drove through South Carolina, and I've heard tell that they have a primary coming up real soon.
On the way back, we took off on some side roads off I-95, and went to her sister's near Myrtle Beach. On that trip, I actually saw some Ron Paul signs here and there. Besides that, there was one Edwards sign, a couple of Mitt Romney signs ("Jesus Saves" was still the #1 sign seen in any case), and none for Obama, even though we passed through towns that were over 50% African-American. My lady's sister said she'd seen a lot of Paul signs/stickers, and a fair number of Hillary ones, but I didn't see any for the witch.
The one thing that I left with was the impression that if you didn't watch the news or read the papers, you might not have any idea that there was a fairly important primary coming up in a bit more than two months. It really seems that very few people are interested. I'd like to know what it looks like from the roadways of Iowa and New Hampshire.
