There is an oil spill, but it doesn’t look like any major damage to the bridge.

Oil spill in San Francisco!
This is, of course, Bush’s fault.

Well, SFers better find an alternate route.
Maybe container ships used as auto barges.

Which support did it hit? If it hit that center support or one of the towers on the SF side, I think there is not much to worry about. If it hit something on the Oakland side, that might be a different matter.

Here is the latest report from NBC (eleven minutes ago):
“The ship was an outbound vessel, Hunter said, but its destination is unknown. It hit the fourth of five towers on the San Francisco side of the bridge. That is the second tower from Treasure Island.”

Brings to mind when the phosphate hauler ran in to the Sunshine Skyway taking the bridge and a whole lot of folks with it.

With all the anti-terrorist surveillance equipment in this country I wonder if there are pictures of the collision.

That's what I was thinking. So Tampa Bay is no longer the only place where "the ship hits the span".

Which is not to make light of a tragedy in which 35 people died.

If two moving vessels collide, it’s a collision. If a moving vessel strikes a fixed object, it’s technically called an allision

Looks like it hit the base of the tower. That pilot’s going to be looking for a job.

I think in all fairness to the environment, all shipping in the sensitive bay area should be stopped.
