A few years ago I visited a clinic connected with a large university hospital. They had recently converted all of their medical records to a computerized system. When I expressed some concerns about the security of the system they looked at me as if I was nuts.
I realize that these things probably make it a lot easier for doctors, but there are some good aspects to having paper files that are fairly certain to remain in the doctor's office.
There appear to be various constituencies that are are pushing for central storage of medical records. Some of these groups obviously want access to these records for reasons that are not in the interest of the individual patient.
