Actually, if you’ve ever had that kind of shockingly bad news, the police will usually show up on your doorstep to deliver it. That was my first thought when I read this account. They were trying to get NYPD to deliver the news in person. I’d bet that the airport and Phoenix PD can verify that they were in contact with NYPD, especially given the family’s prominence.
The husband and his fatmouth mother need to shut up and sit down. The woman is dead and it is a tragedy. Their public hysterics aren’t helping at all.

People in that state of mind are frequently restrained to protect them from themselves. Maybe the mistake was not putting her in a strait-jacket. They were “concerned” about her safety because she was depressed and suicidal, but not concerned enough to accompany her. The victims here are the police officers who are now under all kinds of stress for doing their job and for using reasonable restraint.
