Alas, Fragile X is an issue in only a small number of those diagnosed with Autism.
second identifiable cause of MR after Downs. And it causes a wide variety of symptoms. THis could be breattaking research in its implications.
This is exciting news to learn about. My better half works with these children and it is totally heartbreaking to see how this affects them. I can’t wait for her to get home so I can show her this article.
You’re good people.
That's probably because so many conditions are diagnosed as Autism these days.
Interesting thing is this supports the concept of Autism Spectrum Disorder. Some with fragile X have no symptoms, some males. You would think all would have symptoms. So there is variability in the presentation of people with the defective gene.
While it produces few with autism, it is the second leading identifiable cause of MR. And MR is a far more significant problem in numbers of people than Autism.
At any rate, this is incredible and opens up a whole line of inquiry for treatment.
I agree.
Anyone who has been with some of the kids diagnosed with Autism are living saints. However, for some kids, once you exercise them, (a lot) and feed them the right foods, suddenly the disorder is gone.
Amazingly, many diagosed kids with both Aspergers and Autism thrive once they are homeschooled. Go figure.
I read that children with Autism with an IQ of 80 or above usually grow out of it. Back in the old days such children weren’t considered handicapped.
Really?!?
Honestly, that is amazing.
We have tons of moms who were given the dreaded “A” diagnosis from well meaning schools. Of course the word was thrown around but never written down and used with the word “spectrum” so it was hard to pinpoint.
These moms brought their kids home, enrolled them in soccer, basketball and any other sport they could find. Now the boys are health, happy, learn well, smart and witty and most importantly, TIRED.
We need to defund a system that labels kids just to get more federal money, so we can really help the kids that really need it.
Back in the old days such children weren't medicated into zombies either. I work with these kids and have seen the disasters drugs can cause. Too many doctors, schools, and parents rush to put a label on kids which in turn gives them free reign on stuffing pills down them.
We were always planning to homeschool our son anyway, but ESPECIALLY after he was diagnosed with PDD-NOS (a mild form of autism). I shudder to think of him in a public-school environment.
He is indeed thriving now (age 9).
I made the mistake of telling him he could be anything he wanted to be when he grows up.
He's going to become an Ancient Egyptian.
>>He’s going to become an Ancient Egyptian<<
LOL!
Well, you’ll be able to pick him out in a crowd!!!
The Kindergarten teacher my daughter has said that she had ADD. She worked with her, allowed water at her desk and told us to skip red dyes. She put her in the back of the room so there would be no distractions behind her. It worked.
Going to first grade was a disaster. The teacher was clueless, and although I begged, she continually thought that putting her in the front of the class was the solution. She then allowed her to leave her work for “play time” and gave her detentions for not finishing it.
I pulled her at Christmas, got through 1st grade work in three months and now is doing a 7th grade curriculum at 9 years old.
All she needed was a distraction free room.
In mice.... Unfortunately, what happens in mice often doesn’t transfer well to humans.
I would not let any teacher make such a diagnosis.
They are not qualified.
And they have an interest in over-specifying: Their job is easier if the kid is medicated.
Our diagnosis was by qualified specialists - we were fearing full-blown autism (at age 3.5), but the specialists tagged it as PDD-NOS.
Son was diagnosed as being ADD. What he was, was really, really bored in class. When you can do class work three-four years ahead of what they’re teaching, and are stuck there...well, I’d be considered ADD as well.
By whom?
Honestly, I suspected it and went to my ex-boss (the Psychiatrist) who told me that as long as it wasn’t written down in her records and he teacher was willing to go the extra mile, it wouldn’t hurt.
The first grade teacher was the problem.
Not only are the kids easier when medicated, but they get more federal funds if they are labelled.
My girls are doing fine right at home. When I get whining about finishing schoolwork, we run around the block. They feel better, Our 9 month old puppy feels better and it helps mom’s hips.
Win/win/win situation!
(and I’m still giggling about your son’s choice!)
BTW, what were your son’s symptoms that made you think that things were not right?
We have lots of friends who’s sons were pegged Autistic including my Great Nephew. Maybe they should look into this.
