One solution goes largely unmentioned by Obama and Edwards--if they really want to keep a lot of young black men (and others) out of prison, end the idiotic Drug War. According to Drug War Facts: How about also ending the Welfare State’s attack on the Black Family.

According to the same census data, 530,000 of these African-American males, or twenty eight percent, were enrolled in colleges or universities (including two-year-colleges) in 2005. That is five times the number of young black men in federal and state prisons and two and a half times the total number incarcerated. Obama's screw up is that he just counted blacks actually in jail/prison. Counting blacks on probation brings the figure up. In 1995 there were 748,505 blacks on probation. Given the large percentage of these who would be of an age where they could be in college, adding the probation figures makes his statement plausible

And how many of those in jail for ‘drug crimes’ are also career criminals in other arenas, such as theft, robbery, abuse? Oh, right, that’s right, can’t challenge the dogma that drugs are a victim-less crime, lest this get in the way of their ‘fact check.’
