Ten times seems excessive to me. You need help because they need to be hospitalized and you can’t get them to the hospital because they are confused and acting out. You call the police for help and you end up with a dead family member. This is far more common than people realize.

I had a mentally ill family member. I called the police to come help me get him to the hospital, because he was refusing to go and trying to grab the phone from me.

Instead of taking him to the hospital, they took him to jail, although I kept telling them he was diagnosed mentally ill and couldn’t go to jail because he needed his meds.

Because he was so long without medication, he ended up in the hospital for two months. During that time I had to deal with all the legal hassle of him being charged with “domestic violence”. I had to hire a lawyer, and spent nights in worry.

I would NEVER call the police again in such a situation. All they did was add more stress to my family, cost me money I didn’t have and upset the living daylights out of my kids, who saw their sick father hauled off to jail.

They also notified DCF and I had to deal with those people for years, who think they own your family. They made nice money off us, and I didn’t need their help at all, thank you.

They could have just waited her out. Give her some space and time to calm down (yes, even if it was a couple of hours). If push came to shove, a thick blanket and a couple of strong men could have disarmed her.

Grabbing her arm while she was upset and armed would not be a good idea, nor would be tipping over her chair (although dang funny and what would have happened on Reno 911). But even those bad ideas would have been better than tasering her, much less tasering her 10 times.

The family said it plans to sue the Green Coves Springs Police Department now that it has all the reports regarding their loved one's death.

Good - lets get the facts out in the open.

No good guys in this one. Cops overreacting (sure seems to be rampant these days, doesn’t it......) and a ‘family’ looking for an easy payday.

Many of these situations would not occur if the police had better training in dealing with the mentally ill.

one of the officers used her Taser gun nine times for a total of 160 seconds

Did you all catch that it was a woman cop? Harder for a little lady to disarm a schizophrenic with a knife and hammer . . .

I'd bet a jury would see this case as an excessive use of force. Clay Co. would do good to settle this one out of court.

Is it just me or does the phrase “It’s funny until someone gets hurt...then it becomes hilarious” come to mind?

I’m wondering how she was able to continue resisting arrest after being tased 10 times.

Usually you have to be on PCP or something similar.

Take it easy on the female cop. She had an argument with her wife that day. (SAC)

I’m guessing the female cop isn’t really qualified to be a cop and was in fear. How cops can’t distract, wait-out or talk the lady out of her rage is beyond me.

Sometimes, actually lots of times, the best thing one can do is nothing. Of course the cops don’t have time for that AND the paperwork.

"We're going to try to compensate the estate and the family and try to get justice," Alexander said.

WTF! Compensate the estate? The woman had to have been drawing disability.

I have a sister I'd like those officers to visit. They can take out her four children and their tax dollar sucking kids also.
