The scary thing is that the 5th District is perhaps the most "conservative" district left in Massachusetts, which of course is not saying much. However, given the flight of ex-Mass. Republicans to New Hampshire during the past ten years or so, combined with an increase in the (ahem) "non-native born" population in Lowell and Lawrence, any remaining Republicans don't really stand a chance.

The same thing happened in the 6th district (mostly Essex county on the north shore). There used to be lots of Republicans there, but many have fled since the early 1990s. That's a key reason why Massachusetts is now so utterly "blue" - conservative-minded souls have given up and fled.

This is the only reference to backyard fires in MA I could find, are you sure they were banned (got links?)? Even here we can have cooking fires and wood bbq’s.

Tsongas is in the top tier of candidates they could put up at this point, I think only a State Senator Steven Baddour (D-Mehtuen), or a State Senator Steven Panagiotakos (D-Lowell) might have been better candidates. But the Democrats would be sacrificing Core Idealogy for Votes with these candidates. Baddour and Pangy are perhaps two of the most Conservative Democrats up on Beacon Hill. Baddour frequently worked with Romney, and Pangy opposes Abortion and Gay Marriage.

So unless either of them ran in 2008 (if Ogonowski won), I think Jim could actually hold the seat. (At least until they would carve up his district in 2011 when we lose 2 Congressional Districts)

Its certainly competitive, but in the end, Ogonowski will come up short.

Tsongas will not get 55% of the vote.
Ogonowski will get at least 40% of the vote.
Conservative Independent Candidates will hurt Ogonowski (Stupid Constitution Party)

Mass. will lose one seat, not two, after the 2010 Census. But yes, the 5th may be the one to go (although I think that by all rights they should put Boston in one district and combine Cambridge with Newton and Brookline and thus get rid of the 8th).

Its a one party state. Even California which tilts Blue, sends at least a third Republicans to Congress. Massachusetts is beyond help.

A real hell hole whose majority of residents are either amoral or brain dead.

Two is a possibility. But they want the 9th District to be the “Irish” District, the 8th is for moonbats.

“Two is a possibility.”

Not really. Even if Mass. keeps its stagnant growth for the rest of the decade, they’d be entitled to 9.11 CDs (down from 9.83 in 2000), and it would pretty much need to be entitled to less than 8.5 CDs for them to lose 2 seats. But Mass. will almost certainly lose another seat after the 2020 Census, though, which would give it 8 CDs, which would be less than Tennessee.

“But they want the 9th District to be the “Irish” District, the 8th is for moonbats.”

Yeah, I know. Of course, the 10th actually has more Irish than the 9th, so go figure. You’re probably right that they won’t do what I hope they’d do, but it would be sweet if they did. Boston as a whole would probably elect a non-moonbat (maybe Lynch), and Capuano and Frank would fight over the new Cambridge-Newton-Brookline CD.

It’s interesting to hear feedback from MA Freepers.
