Back in the 1970's I was acquainted with Archibald 'Rocky' Rees, a Yale graduate who was a leader in the anti-tax movement. I was attending a CPAC meeting early in the Reagan administration and ran into him and some other associates in the conservative movement and they told me that Rocky had just received an appointment to be the Chief Justice of American Samoa, and they told me this obscure fact. Not a bad job, a non-hardworking job in an American paradise, so this stuck in my mind.
And what a loverly bunch they are.
I find that I am somewhat mistaken about Rocky Rees, his given name is Grover, and he wasn't appointed until later in the Reagan administration, staying in office till 1991, staying in the government until resigning when Clinton sent a boatload of refugees in California back to Red China. He has been an outspoken advocate of Constitutional Law, and defender of human freedom, especially in the Elian Gonzalez case and the current slave trade. Right now he is Ambassador to East Timor (these details from Wikipedia).
I worked for a company that opened a branch office here so that I could manage the worker’s comp claims for Star-Kist and also do maritime claims for the tuna boats.
Did that for four years, then dusted off the law degree and did free legal aid for three and a half years.
Went into private practice in January ‘04.
