It looks like USGS has already downgraded the magnitude to 6.9. That's still a very large quake.

Hi BD! Just wondering, what is considered deep for earthquakes? I have a hard time deciferin’ sometimes....
is there still a tsunami warning?
The small 3.5-km-wide island of Tinakula is the exposed summit of a massive stratovolcano that rises 3-4 km from the sea floor at the NW end of the Santa Cruz islands.
Tinakula resembles Stromboli volcano in containing a breached summit crater that extends from the 851-m-high summit to below sea level.
Landslides enlarged this scarp in 1965, creating an embayment on the NW coast.
The satellitic cone of Mendana is located on the SE side.
The dominantly andesitic Tinakula volcano has frequently been observed in eruption since the era of Spanish exploration began in 1595.
In about 1840, an explosive eruption apparently produced pyroclastic flows that swept all sides of the island, killing its inhabitants.
Frequent historical eruptions have originated from a cone constructed within the large breached crater.
These have left the upper flanks of the volcano and the steep apron of lava flows and volcaniclastic debris within the breach unvegetated.
35 km is at the bottom of being considered a "shallow" quake. Here's a breakdown graphic showing depth:
Quakes in this area are normally pretty deep (see the green and blue dots)

Can you tell me what this means? I have a son living on Treasure Island (man made) off the coast of San Francisco and am not sure what affect, if any, this would have on him.
Thanks.
There has been no official tsunami warning issued for this earthquake.
The comment within the informational bulletin posted by Brian Mosely about the possibility of local tsunamis within the vicinity of the quake still applies.
Santa Cruz Islands
Not Santa Cruz Island. That why I didn’t feel it.
thanks!
Fooled me to. I was about to call family in CA.
The worst case scenarios are all for the local area and might include the unstable flank of a volcano sluffing off into the sea and creating a bad wave. A rise in the sea floor could create some smaller waves and a relatively shallow quake like this could give rise to something.
All that is the reason for the warning system that Southeast Asia should have been, but wasn't hooked up to. That lack of warning made the Asian Tsunami so deadly.
thank you so much for such a great explanation!
he has just moved there. would you recommend I ask to be on the ping list for this sort of thing?
It hasn't cost me any sleep.
Maybe I'll just go to bed.
Isn’t Treasure Island a Naval Base?
