“Welcome to FR, newby.”

Thanks for the welcome. Incidentally I was tired when I first replied to this thread, but realised it was very old a few posts in...and by then I was intrigued. Hope I haven’t trodden on any toes by getting interested and accidentally ‘bumping’ it. ;-)

Organisation = Organization, if you weren’t necessarily born in the US. Both spellings are used depending on the particular office of the WHO.

Or did you just intend an ad hominem attack, as opposed to an actual debate point?

I've heard the 'discreet' claims repeatedly. Admit it. When the baby is done nursing/falls asleep or you have to switch breasts, it is very likely that part of the breast is going to show no matter how careful you are.

The point I'm making is, there are far too many nursing mothers who don't care one whit about the rights or comfort of others. They think they should get top priority because, by golly, they're moms and they have a baby!

When I nursed, it was no big deal to retire to the ladies room (or some room that had been provided) to nurse. It sure didn't matter to my little one, and it was more considerate of others. I can only think of one time where I had to use the receiving blanket over the baby because there was no where to go. My little one was fine with it, and again, it was more considerate of those around me.

I have no sympathy for women who try to play the victim because other people don't like watching them nurse. In fact, they disgust me. They are no different from the radical feminists who whine and complain because they don't get special treatment merely because they are female.

but s/he was drawing a parallel between you eating your dinner and a baby eating its own.

It is an idiotic parallel because I don't eat my dinner from a naked breast.

no point, nothing to do with the argument

LOL What a clown you are. Apparently, you just chose to jerk your knee instead of actually reading my posts.

You’re incorrect - I did read your posts. Despite the fact that I may disagree with many of your arguments, most of your posts are well-written and don’t decline into ad hominem attacks. My point was simply that in the particular post I was referring to, you didn’t make any salient point but simply chose to insult the previous respondent, rather than debating any point he/she had made. You’ve already proven you have the intelligence and strength of opinion to make your case, so I fail to understand why you’d sully yourself with such inane tactics in this particular one.

Just my particular point of view, on that particular post, and I was in no way attacking the quality of your posts in general.

I can only comment on what I’ve experienced and seen. In my area, it’s relatively common to notice that someone is feeding their infant - by the fact they have a lump under their top or so on. Although we can’t help what we first notice, if I see a woman doing so I’ll smile and look away. I don’t stare, I don’t pay a huge amount of attention to the woman nursing the baby, and I’ve certainly never been in a situation where I’ve seen a nipple or any expanse of breast. Perhaps things are different where you are - and I’m not saying I can speak for you, none of us can - but certainly that’s the situation from where I’m standing. So yes, I consider those mothers discreet.

Additionally I’ve not met any mother who thinks that her ‘rights’ supercede those of others on a general basis. Personally I can’t imagine being offended by the nursing mothers I’ve seen, but I guess I can imagine that others might be offended by the mental image of what’s going on under a shirt or shawl.

I’m very glad there are suitable nursing rooms available in your area and that you found breastfeeding such an easy and fulfilling experience - I wish that were the case everywhere, but it’s clearly not. Most restrooms, however, are really just bathrooms and I don’t feel I could expect any nursing mother to feed her child close to a toilet. It’s not hygienic or comfortable, and many of them have nowhere to sit except in the stalls themselves! Perhaps if there were more comfortable, pleasant and clean nursing lounges provided as standard, we wouldn’t even be having this debate because most mothers I know would JUMP at the chance of such a pleasant place to feed their child.

As it happens, i doubt I’d have a problem using a blanket or large shawl where I live - the weather tends towards cold here and I wouldn’t personally mind unless it was unusually hot. Bear in mind this is conjecture, as I won’t have any children until later this year, hence the ‘probably’! However, there are many women who use nursing tops designed for the purpose, and in my experience you’d have to be staring an awful lot, and sitting very close to the woman in question, in order to see anything that could be considered ‘obscene’ by even the most easily-offended person.

As for ‘watching them nurse’...I doubt that the people in question are actually forced to look so closely as to see anything objectionable. Even if, as you say, there is part of the breast showing (let’s face it, probably rather less than on the average red-carpet actress on Oscars Night), how long do you think the average person watches these women for? I understand that I can only speak from personal experience of noticing babies being fed in public, and I also understand that you’re speaking from yours which is no doubt different, but I’ve never seen a hint of anything obscene - for instance, I don’t recall ever having seen a nipple, not that I was particularly trying either!

Incidentally, I can’t speak for the radical feminists you mention, so I’ll leave that comment to someone who can. ;-)

One need only read the thread to see it.

You must not have read my posts because I am adamantly AGAINST feeding infants in the restrooms or having to bottle feed just to satisfy some uptight stranger. I nursed both of my kids, when and where they needed it, so I don’t need any education on breastfeeding, thanks anyway. I have never proposed those two options as valid. Read again.
