Repeating some of the concluding remarks from this excellent 2002 article:

Somewhere along the way, in your area/state/whatever, the word "Republican" is going to come to mean what you say it means. And at the same time, you're going to have a real say in the real world, from the election commission seats which are legally guaranteed to the Republican Party to the press coverage which comes when a Democrat does something and your local newspaper needs to cover "the other side." Oh, and the donor base: don't forget the donor base...

The republican party cannot count on continued support on the basis of being a “leser evil(TM)”. What we really need is runoff elections and at least the legal possibility of some third party rising up to replace the dems.

It was defeated in 2006 as well, until Bush, McCain, Kennedy, and numerous others revived it. It'll likely have 9 more more lives. It ain't over yet.

Born in 1854..became a national party in 1856.....Lincoln elected 1860, with less than 40% of the vote in a 4 party race.
