Yesterday was a holy day for the Catholic Church, so I’m not surprised to see so many injured around the churches.

Feast of the Assumption of Mary.

One of my Church's priests is Peruvian and was there visiting family so we are praying for him.

My goodness, the death toll has risen since I last checked. That is horrible for those people.

Sorry I was just referring to the title of the thread. It says 337. The last I heard it was 115. Wait one and I’ll see if I can come up with a current total. Hope it hasn’t risen.

International Herald Tribune, Forbes and Newsday all have the death toll at 450. This is just so sad. Prayers for the victims and their families.

An 8.0 earthquake is the equivalent seismic energy yield for about 1 billion tons of TNT btw.

There was a significant earthquake in Boston around the time of the great EQ of 1755 in Lisbon, Portugal. The Lisbon EQ was felt in Sweden and North Africa. Actually there were several EQs the same day. This is not uncommon.

I was in a 7.5 in Mexico City in 1957. It was really spooky. Weeks later, I would be lying in bed and feel a little shudder of the ground, aftershock. There were hundreds of these over several months. This is common with larger EQs.

I’d read about the Boston earthquake in 1755 (though I didn’t remember the year, just the century!). AFAIK the damage was minimal, if only because there wasn’t that much built up. All the earthquakes (maybe 2 or 3) I’ve ever heard of in the New England are pretty much resulted in waking a few people up and maybe breaking a few dishes. I’ve never felt one.

Newest report puts the quake at 8.0...

My wife’s family live in Callau, and around the Lima metropolitan area... They’re shook up pretty bad, but that’s the worst of it. Everyone in their neighborhood fled to the local park. Homes are mostly concrete block construction, and I doubt anything meets even rudimentary sesmic codes. I’m afraid that death toll is going to go much higher.

yes, when i came to america in 79, i was shocked when i saw houses made of wood instead of concrete. now i see why. they tend to absorb quakes better.

got the radio stream at last!

RPP reports evacuated patients are at jorge chavez airport in lima. families should come to pick them up there are some who have not been reunited with their families and or NO one will claim them. civilians are still calling the radio station and relaying information from the affected areas. people are still without help in some areas.

The evening news has upgraded the EQ to 8.0. That is really heavy duty. One American is reported killed along with the hundreds of Peruvians.

Are you Peruvian? If so, my wife would probably like to have a discussion with you... probably in Spanish.
