well....everything revolves around who is or is not a racist
and meanwhile more black culture is in worse shape now then it was during james crow
and we ignore that for fear of being called a racist
hence crutch....cover.....maybe just simply an excuse
it all goes back to human nature....why have to painfully self examine when whites will grovel and self flagellate for you in their insatiable desire to absolve you
hell....i’d blame crackers too if they’d kiss my butt and pay me for it..lol
While it is true that political correctness, like all fanaticism, is humorless and cannot take a joke, it is also true that not all humor is a harmless laugh at oneself. Some humor can be false and mean-spirited. Blacks were depicted in a degrading manner because this reinforced to whites the idea that blacks were inferior. This allowed whites to pretend that they were “protecting” blacks by providing segragated facilities, denying blacks the vote, denying them most opportunities for an education, etc. I am not saying that everyone who laughs at an old “Amos ‘N Andy” program is a racist. However, the old stereotypes did serve a powerful political interest in keeping some people at the level of second-class citizens. Not everything in the “good old days” was good just like not every new fad is good.
“Cavemen?, their pictures suck and they look like hippies”
Homer J. Simpson
The Kingfish was the main subject of derision; Amos and Andy were the park-bench philosophers turned social pundits who brought the neighborhood to life.
While high hi-jinks were going on all about the world and the big city in which this small slice of life took place, the issues, subjects and characters were a comic micro-look at the big picture of graft, corruption, and the full list of transgressions that is man’s lot.
What made the show funny was the insight that these small time players had on their miniature stage.
There’s a Foghorn Leghorn in every chicken coop.
