As a listener to San Francisco conservative KSFO AM radio said this morning, In China when an executive resigns it's to spend more time with his ancestors.
It appears to me that China is spending more on building the civilian economy than on oppressive means.
It is the problem of system not construction materials. Iron-clad state control is necessary, which will limit economic and social development. Under such oppressive system, corruption and inefficiency will rise. You will not allowed to succeed without being sponsored by powerful figures in the regime. Pleasing sponsors will be more important than running efficient business.
Central control also have inherent inefficiency.
In general, oppressive system produces bad inefficient decision-making mechanism.
Brazil and Argentina do not have so many disparate ethnic groups under its control. China is more like former Yugoslavia.
I will agree with you. The corruption you speak of already exists in China. Even the central government admits it is a problem. However, one advantage of state control is that major projects can be completed without public hearings. Ordinarily, that is not good. But in a country that has few (or few for their population), many times, it is better to just forge ahead. Look at Mexico City. They wanted to build another airport there. However, there have been so much protest by local indigenous people groups that it got cancelled. Now they're just adding a runway to the existing airport.
Even here in America, it isn't uncommon that public hearings and permit applications take longer than the actual construction of a project. But America and other developed nations can afford that luxury.
We can not take for granted how important infrastructure is and how difficult it can be built when there is public discord. You can buy all the airplanes you want or purchase all the cars you want, but without the airports to land and take off and without the freeways to drive, it becomes meaningless.
As China begins to build sufficient infrastructure, then it will become more and more important for the government to pull back from business. And yes, even democracy will be necessary to ensure that there is a healthy balance between government oversight over businesses and staying out of the day to day decisions of corporate life.
Central control also have inherent inefficiency.
I agree. I do believe democracy will come to China someday as the economy necessitates. What I believe will happen is that China's growth will slow down and even come to a halt and there will be a push to bring elections. And growth will continue to forge ahead after that. I don't believe China will simply disintegrate nor remain where Brazil is.
Brazil and Argentina do not have so many disparate ethnic groups under its control. China is more like former Yugoslavia.
I don't believe ethnic groups have as much to do on whether a country stays together or not as it is with the conduct or the ethical behavior of those ethnic groups.
Then just shut up and don't buy things made in China!
Jeez!I don't know which is dumber - the poll or the people who think they need to be told to boycott something in order for them to do so.
