Refreshing, a politician calling spade a spade, taking on unions and horrors of "free and universal" public education system... Just think how well "free and universal" public healthcare system for all would work. States and cities should be laboratories and experiments of failures and successes of different approaches, not one-size-fits-all undunded mandates by federal government. The ones that succeed will draw in the best and will be followed by others who want the same, with differences in approach only dictated by differences in local and state cultures or economies. That's also the way to free market approach winning in vast majority of the states. That's why welfare states and national politicos are rushing to institute "universal" healthcare, before people will see the "Sicko" failures of the states that tried it.

"We should basically, fundamentally replace the Detroit school system with a series of experiments to see if they'll work,"
Detroit IS dead in the water with most of the once gainfully employeed escaping to the suburbs like Eastpointe, Roseville, etc.....
Those who remain are either retired with no incomes to allow them to move, the chronically unemployed or the gangstas and druggies.........
The entire city government and city council needs to be removed and drowned.
Just heard that a new investigation is now underway here in Detroit whereas approx. $40 million dollars is unaccounted for and reportedly paid to independent contractors via electronic funds transferring with no substantiating paper trail.........Gosh, who woulda thought! LOL!
With family names such as Cockrell and Kilpatrick, is there any wonder the city reeks with corruption?????

I agree with what was said, however I wish he would have kept his yap shut. Nothing like stirring the hornets nest DURING contract negotiations. He just PO’d the union and their willingness to give concessions to Ford, GM and Chrysler just went out the window.

Looks like Detroit has been Katrina’d by multiple generations of Democratic Party domination of local politics.

If there is any doubt about Newt’s opinions, go to Detroit and see just how screwed a major American city can get with the nutcases elected to office.

There is at least one upside to the state of modern Detroit: If John Carpenter and Kurt Russell ever decide to make another Snake Plissken movie, they have a location ready to use as is.

By the way....
Newt has nailed the whole Detroit School System mess. They just "lost" 46 million dollars.
Google the story about the retired cement block mogul (from Canton MI?) who wanted to donate 100 million dollars to build Charter Schools in Detroit a few years ago and the Detroit Teachers Unions shut down the schools and protested for a day in Lansing!
After that stunt, the Mogul took the offer off the table....
