Now he’s being charged as if he actually hates the religion.
He wasn't defending anything when he told people to read it, and not to criticize it from a position of ignorance.
Which does not mean "don't criticize it". It means know it for what it is...

Certainly wouldn’t be a “hate crime”.
Now, if he does it to intimidate people at the university, then they have the right to boot him from the school for violating the student conduct policy on that pont, as well as the mischief. However, if the execution of that policy has a double standard though (like allowing for desecration of Christian holy books), he might be able civilly to sue the University for discrimination on that, but still be booted fo the mischief.
So, I don't see what the problem is. Hate Crimes are a uneccesary and unlawful invention to create supercitizenry, with advanced rights and protections over other citizen groups. Lady justice is depicted as blindfolded for a reason.
