How much do you want to bet it's because the accused doesn't speak Vai fluently, making it difficult for the interpreter to know what he's saying?
The official language of Liberia, where this "individual" came from *is* English, and Vai is mostly a dead language. This is a mutt, and his lawyer gaming the system...
the infowarrior
I don’t believe he even speaks Vai fluently. I think that’s the problem one of the translators had. Wanna bet? I’m taking bets on that one. Come on! Any takers?
Doesn’t the loser in British courts receive a bill? Hence, the lower rate of litigation.
Perhaps we need a version of this.
I read that he does speak English. But apparently not when it’s to his advantage not to speak English.
Some Vai, many of whom are Muslims, are literate in three different languages and scripts: Vai, Arabic, and English. The script has been kept alive largely as a matter of pride. It is not taught routinely to Vai children but is transmitted by knowledgeable elders to youngsters who express a desire to learn it.
It seems to me that this is akin to the idea that a Catholic on trial would require a Latin translator.
Just an incredibly stupid performance by the judge and court.
Presently, Mr. Kannehs command of English was reasonably good, but he commented that at times he still did not understand English very well and would require continuing explanations until he did understand...”
Boot him out of the country.
I expect this will indeed be overturned. The defendant’s lack of a speedy trial was due first and foremost to his own fraudulently-based demand for an interpreter. Therefore, despite the additional error of the trial court in allowing this blatant fraud to delay the trial, the primary cause of the delay was the defendant’s fraudulent representations to the court, and he should not avoid trial on account of the delay caused by himself.
I guess there is someone left in Maryland still with a brain.
Wonders never cease.
fox news reporting that he speaks and understands English just fine. saying they know because they interviewed him ;) in English.
And you know what keeps getting lost in the sauce? His 7 year old niece, whom raped repeatedly. What is the standard Muslim punishment for rape victims? Has she been stoned yet, or is the family just mentally abusing her until they can get her back to a Muslim country?
In MA, a rapist must be eloquent to get off and rape again.
In MD, no such eloquence is necessary. What a savage state.
He went to school for three years. He is in an English-speaking country. The only words he really needs to know are: “I did it”. And then he can read, “Pack Your Bags” and “You are being deported.” I can help him.
How hard can it be to explain?
“One drug will put you to sleep, and then the next one will stop your heart.” That’s all the translation this guy should get!
A video demonstration would do just fine. It transends all languages. Maybe PETA could send one of their videos.
Aside from the obvious fraud and idiocy that’s been demonstrated by the defendant, defense counsel, and judge, the most preposterous thing about this is that the obscure dialect the defendant claims to need an interpreter for simply doesn’t have words for many of the legal concepts involved in the case. It is not a language in which sophisticated activity of any sort is conducted.
It wouldn’t have made any difference if he’d gone to college in Liberia, rather than the US. There are precisely two post-secondary educational institutions in Liberia. The language of instruction in both is English. Feel free to peruse their websites. You won’t need a translator.
University of Liberia http://www.tlcafrica.com/lu/lu.htm
Cuttington University http://www.cuttington.org/
And needless to say, any college-preparatory high school in Liberia would have to teach primarily or exclusively in English.
You’re correct, however, this law did happen on the Clinton watch...........and Bush could/should do something about it were it not for it’s popularity with the politically correct Teacher’s Unions.
Thanks for your research.
I wish the MSM would cover this angle. They keep talking about him going to high school and college here, as though he picked up a little English along the way. I’d like to see them do a little research and broadcast the fact that this guy’s native tongue is English.
If I’m ever hauled into court, I’m going to demand a Pig Latin translator.
So Judge Dipstick, if you were on the fence with this and the decision was SO difficult and the community was SO concerned, why did you take the side of an alleged perv over a 7 yo girl that had been repeatedly raped? Aren't you lefties always blathering on about doing right "for the children"?
