I believe the McCain implosion is very sad, because it was completely needless.
John McCain had been a very good conservative Senator (not flawless, mind you, but mostly on our side) for years. Then he decided his path to the Presidency was through the media and running not only to the left of GWB, but against the core conservatives of the party.
He lost.
Then he decided that the next time, he would win by hugging GWB. He had the creds with independents and moderates, but felt he could win back the base by siding with the President. Unfortunately for him, he chose to do so when the President was deciding to kiss off the base.
I never was on the side of the most ardent of immigration restrictionists. But I never sided with the open-borders crowd. When push came to shove, I may not have liked the attitude or approach of some of the immigration-opponents, but I felt they were right in their prescriptions. Bad time for McCain to dig in his heels against us.
McCain was the wrong candidate at the wrong time. He’s been a mostly good Senator, with an unfortunate habit of wanting to be loved by the New York Times.
While I don’t support him, I do like the way he’s been raising h#ll in the Senate lately.
The ‘Gang of 14’ and the Shamnesty deal finished John McCain for good.
It’s hard to sell a defective product to Americans once the problems are made public. So ends the McCain bid for the White House.
That’s a fair point I think, but I also think that with the electorate as split as it has been the past few elections, it takes some Independents...and yes, even a few Dems to capture the WH.
I don't disagree, but to me, its selling your side.
The dems simply believe, that pro gun control, pro abortion, pro gay, and pro tax hikes, make candidates more electable, (which in some areas is definatly true), but they seem to believe its most areas, and when they lose, they blame it on not explaining it well enough (or they curse the voters).
Reagan ran a hard right wing campaign that has not been seen since then, Bush (sr), Dole, and Bush (43) have not dared run that kind of campaign, simply put, the chips will fall where they may, but not every part of the country is the same, and you do not need to follow a strategy that the guys who oppose you want you to.
Keep in mind, that according to Carville and Clinton, they both don't think they would have won in 92 or 96 without Perot.
I think the only freeper I know who is a McCainiac is Norman Bates.
See, this is why the information superhighway known as the internet is great. It gives everyone a Readers Digest version of events and facts that we would otherwise be clueless about because nobody could possibly know everything. That's why they call it political discourse.
I was in college 5 miles away from the Capital at the time. I had never heard of the Keating affair. (probably too busy playing foosball and beer pong). Now I know. Thanks.
To be fair, McCain was probably the least guilty of the 5, and Bush’s brother was certainly more involved in a scandal at another S&L.
Alright, now I’m going to have to research this whole Keating thing for myself.
