State Rep. Michael Merrifield, a Colorado Springs Democrat who chairs the House Education Committee, called the whole notion of course requirements “out of date, old-fashioned,” and “so 20th century.”
“Forcing every student into a curriculum of more math and science is not relevant to most students’ lives,” said Merrifield, a former music teacher who believes the state instead should increase the fine arts requirements for graduation.
But Rep. Rob Witwer, a Genesee Republican whose bill to require four years of math and three years of science was killed at the legislature this year, urged commissioners to stay tough on requirements.
“Now is not the time to lower standards,” he said. “The standards are being raised across the world.”

Forcing every student into a curriculum of more math and science is not relevant to most students lives,
See, that makes it easier for the ‘Rats to convince the sheeple that we’re all going to be flooded when the ice melts, that when someone gets rich someone else gets poor, and other elements of the leftist agenda......
I wonder what this means...sounds like double speak.
You cannot force standards they are instilled at home.
Why does a person who wants to be a music, ag, or history teacher need 4 years of math?
The problem is not standards it is lack of discipline ( learned at home ) and lack of pride in our country. Kids are pounded everyday that our country is not the greatest and after it sinks in one might think why try so hard if I won’t achieve anything. I’ll take the easy short route and not only do they not achieve their potential but the country looses as well.
High schools and colleges should stop teaching foreigners to take our technology back to their countries and teach our kids some sense of pride in kicking other nations around in the business/technology arena is our heritage and not tis one world union crap.
Sounds like ‘affirmative action’ to allow in kids who are not prepared for college.
Learning a foreign language can be very useful, but in my experience most don't use what the learn often enough to remember the little the do pick up in such classes for long.
With the number of Spanish speaking people in the US that may have changed a bit for some of those learning Spanish in schools, but the requirement of two years of a foreign language is mainly a waste forced on students by liberal educators.
I've been working on picking up some Spanish over the last few years, but taking two years of it in high school would have been a waste. Taking one year of a foreign language is useful to learn the basics of how other languages differ from ours, but learning more than the basics is meaningless if you aren't going to use it.
Thanks, I’ll add this to my list.
Democrats just keep on doing what they do. As they keep moving to the left we can only hope conservatives and Republicans will get our act together to defeat them, again.
That’s what I was thinking. My kid is in college, about to graduate, and he makes good grades. Every once in awhile, he’ll get an email from the Financial Aid office saying he qualifies for a merit scholarship (he already has a full scholarship, but I think these emails may be computer generated.) Anyhoo, if you read through the qualifications for the scholarship, he would meet the standards, but as a side note, near the end of the notice will be some gobbledygoop doublespeak about minority students taking preference, i.e. don’t bother to apply if you’re Caucasian.
"Great news! I hope they lower the standards even more... otherwise who will be registering for my classes?"
Ha! Are you kidding? They call two years of a foreign language “hard”? We were required to take two years just to graduate from high school! And most colleges look for three years. ANd we had a gazillion other requirements to fulfill in high school, some were solid, some were stupid. Of course, my high school is ranked 143rd in the nation so the requirements would be expected to be higher, but c’mon, if you only have to take one year of a language why take it at all? Chances are you’ll forget everything you learned over the summer.
Ahh, I love the smell of a stinging comeback in the morning.
I wonder how many of the new students will end up taking remedial math and/or English anyway?
That wasn’t a comeback, I meant that it should be required for Hispanic students (legal ones, that is) to learn English instead of us having to put instructions in Spanish on every product we sell.
I agree. If they want to estimate whether the student can handle college coursework, they can just look at his SAT or ACT math scores.
We have seen many with a college degree who can not do basic math nor write a simple business letter.
Sad.
Whatever happen to we lead the world let them learn English mentality? Why should we coalesce. We should be focusing on getting back in the lead and staying there not trying to be cultural.
It maybe a good business strategy now but it weakens our resolve to excel once we start trying to meld.
Ward is still getting his paycheck and benefits.
Thank you taxpayers.
CU is raising its tuition 14 percent soon.
