The young black men who treat young women poorly do it because they can get away with it. Yes, they have bad role models but the women in their lives obviously put up with it.

It seems as if their mothers are actively cheering them on. That is certainly what's happened in the Genarlow Wilson case. It sounds like what is happening in this case as well. And where are the FATHERS who might teach their sons right and/or protect their daughters from predators? Not one of these sad stories mentions a father . . . because there are no fathers in sight.

The preachers who take up the fatherly role in the black community are mostly pimps and predators, as their defense of thoroughly indefensible behavior makes evident.

It sounds to me like you are getting the "facts" of the case from The Nation, or perhaps just CNN. When and if Genarlow gets out of jail, I hope he decides to locate in a neighborhood near you.

I’ve read a good number of sources on the case and think I have a pretty good handle on it. Whichever facts you want to dispute, go ahead and list them.

Let me rephrase/clarify my position:
Wilson got a raw deal in the sentencing because the law at the time sucked. And the DA is full of crap for refusing to consider the fact that the law has been changed. What’s funny is the DA says a judge can’t reduce the charges, but the DA reserves the right to offer a plea bargain.

Well, Al Sharpton is on the case now, so I guess your hero will be out of jail soon. As Genarlow said when he refused to plea bargain, “It’s all about doing what’s right [...] And what’s right is right, and what’s wrong is wrong. And I’m just standing up for what I believe in.” Genarlow’s belief system and yours - and Al Sharpton’s - are clearly in sync. Just, please, don’t let Genarlow pick anyplace near me and my family the next time he decides to stand up for what he believes in.

No one forced her son to violate a child! Scooter Libby was led by an overzealous prosecutor into a perjury trap! There was NO underlying crime in the latter case! So I don't see a double standard here. Child molestation destroyed someone else's life; Libby's perjury harmed no one. The punishment in each case, fit the crime. DEAL WITH IT!

Forgive me, but you sound blinded by hatred/anger/some misguided sense of revanchism.

I didn’t say anything about the Revrund Al. I think people playing the race card on the Wilson case are just misguided. You don’t need to mention race to argue that the man got an unduly harsh sentence, and race isn’t a factor in the sentencing (thank liberal judges for breaking the system and bringing on minimum-sentencing laws).

You seem to think he’s some kind of prowler and if he lives in my ‘hood he’s going to rape my daughter or something. There’s just no indication of that sort of profile in this case.

If I was in this situation I wouldn’t take a plea bargain, which takes away my ability to appeal to a jury of my peers. “What’s right” is that he gets full access to the legal system, which plea bargains short-circuit (I’d like to see a constitutional challenge to plea bargains, which place the prosecutor as judge and jury, but that will have to wait.)

He wanted to try to avoid the sex offender status, which is by the way ridiculous for a crime of these parameters. Is he supposed to think the prosecutor is doing him some kind of favor for waiving his right to trial by jury?

I never called the guy a hero. He’s just a guy who’s got a raw deal thanks to a jerk of a DA. Even convicts are entitled to some fairness.

Are you really a prof? Are you one of the Duke Gang of 88? That’s what your posts sound like.
