Reports I’ve seen indicate the VBIEDs were to be detonated via cells phones which were called not once but TWICE. The VDIEDs failed, not due to any effort by LEOs but by incompetence on the part of the vermin that constructed the VBIEDs.

The IRA used this approach in 1979 when 18 British soldiers were killed at Narrow Water Castle outside Warrenpoint in Northern Ireland.

The 1st bomb was in a lorry load of hay parked along the road and was detonated by remote from the Republic side when soldiers came by. 6 soldiers were killed by this first bomb. When rescuers were flown in by helicopter another bomb across the road was detonated, killing 12 of the rescuers. This was on 27 August 1979, about 5 pm. (That morning Lord Mountbatten, the Queen’s cousin, was blown up on his boat in Sligo.)
