"I can't believe it, I just can't believe it," the Malibu freediver said. HEY!!! I used to spearfish right there in Malibu. The kelp beds are a TERRIFIC place for spearfishing.

Spearfishing looks like fun, I’ve been watching the show on the outdoor channel. I hope to get into it when I move to Florida.

For me California was best because of the kelp beds. They are just about a hundred yards off the coast with LOTS of fish in them.

To each his own but spearfishing is a lot of FUn. I used to spearfish a lot in the kelp beds off Malibu.

For Non-west coast types, these are actually very closely related to both what are called “weakfish” or “sea trout” or “gray trout” in the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast, and speckled trout or spotted sea trout in the South.
Not quite as colorful but otherwise look identical and croak like them, but they get a lot bigger, obviously. Caught a couple once fishing out of Port Hueneme on an overnight boat but I think the biggest was 15 lbs.

I am not much of an underwater type of guy. I don’t even like to wade fish in the bay. I will stay on top of the water in my world in the boat.

Does that white seabass have the two long fangs in front like the speckled trout?

One episode of Spearfisher was at the opening of the sea of cortez. The women shot a world record yellow fin tuna weighing hundreds of pounds. Also had footage of a blue marlin swimming by.

I am not much of an underwater type of guy. I dont even like to wade fish in the bay. I will stay on top of the water in my world in the boat. I'm just the opposite. I love swimming down and among all the sea critters. I remember a friend of mine the same way. We would both skin dive in a rocky tidepool while our other friends looked on in disgust. The only thing is that on the West Coast you have to at least wear the top part of a wet suit to stay warm. Here in Florida, a T-Shirt is fine for most skindiving.
I guess you must like catfish judging from those pics you posted.

I guess you must like catfish judging from those pics you posted.................Lots of fun, that biggest one in the photos weighed in at 60 pounds. Caught him on trott line. Something about picking up the end of the line, feeling a huge tug, easing your way down to him not knowing how well he is hooked, getting the first glimps of him, getting the net ready to land him and then finaly pulling him into the boat. Still looking for that 90 pounder though.
