Clive Cussler’s been looking for the Bonhomme Richard for years. I wonder if the “second American team” is his.

Jones destroyed the Serapis, but then rammed it and boarded it? I am missing something.

“Regardless of his nationality, it is Jones’s spirit, courage and tenacity that has really left an imprint on our naval forces for the past few centuries. I don’t think the word ‘surrender’ was part of his vocabulary and he serves as an example and inspiration for our Navy today.”

a case in point:

Autumn 1942 — Guadalcanal

John Paul Jones never was an American citizen, he is also known as one of the Fathers of the Russian Navy and father of many children where ever he had the oportunity.

The British skipper fought him off along with two other French ships which allowed the convoy he was guarding to escape. But still both crews fought gallantly. Actually they both achieved their objectives.

Another point that is lost on history is “I have not yet began to fight” was not the only famous saying that came from the battle. With most of Jone’s crew dead or wounded, his XO begging him to strike, his mizzen mast and colours shot away, as soon as he gave his famous reply to the British skipper. There were two sailors/marines in the tops doing a little sniping and chuncking a few grenades. They overheard what Jones said, looked at the carnage below of both ships and both crews, one looked at the other and said, “You can pass the word forward, and you can pass the aft and all around the ship, but some SOB never gets the word”.

THIS August, a flotilla of American scientists will mount a £175,000 expedition off Flamborough Head

Where's the money coming from for this expedition?

Scottish captain

I'm not sure I knew John Paul Jones was a Scot. Add another to the list of historical giants.

Flamborough Head is the only naval battle of which I am aware in which the ship that won was the one that was sunk.

Read about the charge of Taffey 3 during the Battle of Layte Gulf. Incredible bravery.

I’ve never seen such a unique tomb. What is on the top of it?

Seems like I’ve read here on FR that they wanted to exhume the remains to see if they were really John Paul Jones’. Not sure whatever became of that.
