I’m sort of curious about why there is not enough refinery capacity in Iran.

In theory, Iran's refining capacity is about 1.6M bpd. A barrel is 42 gallons, and out of that you generally get about 20 gallons of gasoline. So Iran can make in the neighborhood of 32 M gallons/day, to serve a population of 65 million people. That's not that much when you take into account that trucks also need fuel to move products around

That's what it will take. A mild or limited rebellion will just mean a different set of mullahs in charge, and things will be back to how they are in a couple of years, while the leaders of the half-hearted rebellion will be identified and assassinated Things will only get better if ALL the clerics are taken out, and there is a mass bonfire of Qurans all over Iran

I wonder why our leaders in the White House don't see this rationale within their narrow PC point of view.

This is interesting. People pay attention when gov’t decrees things that actually affect their routines.

Iran fears the West could sanction its petrol imports and cripple its economy.

Shades of 1941??

I would like to see a break down of the countries that sell refined oil products to Iran. My impression is that a few of the European nations sell them quite a bit.
It has been a two way street. Direct purchases of oil from Iran for a return of gasoline, lubricants, heating oil etc..
Like with Saddam. Europeans don't want to loose business based on sanctions. They don't feel a direct threat from Iran so figure they will continue doing business with them. Obviously the Russians have a similiar deal.
So sanctions just can't work regardless of what the US may demand.
Those that keep bashing GWB over not stiff enough sanctions are IMHO just whistling in the wind.
Then there is the deals going on with Venezuala for instance, where Chaveze may be promising to sell them cheap gas and some other fractions, along with some vital derivatives from petrochemical plants, if the Europeans where to cave in and go along with stiff sanctions.
And the Russians are always in the loop. They to could supply Iran with gasoline etc..
In short, the US is not in a good position to scare Iran into stopping their nuclear program and supplying terrorist with stuff that kills our troops in Iraq.
The only thing that could keep Iran in check is that fact they don't know if we have the will to surgically remove whatever we wish. But then the part of the equation comes in where do the Mullahs really care. The ones that bet on the hidden bone head showing up surely don't. It is hard to deal with such a crowd of lunatics.

why is there no refinery capability? my theory is the govt of iran does not believe there is a future for it to invest in.

Is that the reason the US does not have sufficient refinery capacity?

I wonder about the wisdom of the politicians and legislature that make it such a difficult process in this country.

Take their satellite dishes (did the Imams eventually back down on that one?), ration their gas, beat their children and throw them into jail. Seems like the Imams either ain't too bright, or they have those towels wrapped to tightly around their heads.

Granted there's no telling how long they might be able to keep getting away with this shiite. Might be for decades. But then again they might strike the fatal spark at any moment.

I keep thinking we should air drop 10 million handguns with a hundred rounds of ammo with each handgun on Iran and let the younger generation take out the trash.

Just because there is regime change doesn't mean that the result is guaranteed to be any more to our liking than what is in power now.

I hope the Iranian people throw off this regime. They deserve better. Imagine what a positive force this country could be if under democratic leadership.

We once hoped for the down fall of Batista.

Russians are reportedly flying MIg fighter jets into Iran as we speak and have been for many days.

It is quite reasonable to suppose that, as they have in the past, they will put islamic Regime ID on them but it will be Russian pilots at the stick.

Iranian Air force sources tell me the Migs are very hard to handle or pilot even for the Russian pilots.

Nevertheless if evolving as speculated, this shows the Russian position in the unrolling events and their willingness to take a stance. I wish the USA would also take a strong stance
