I am a Unix Sysadmin by trade. I have been interested in finding a new job but none are available. Hell no on H1B. The coporate executives don’e need that extra million out of 10 to 20 million they make... Screw them !

Botrh you statement and his statement are correct.
Not all H1Bs are in the same situation.
But certainly the goal of H1Bs is greater supply and lower costs for high-skilled programmers, engineers etc.
Business wouldnt want it if it didnt lower their costs.

I’m not even in the tech field and I’ve seen PLENTY of guys (hell, I am one) that worked jobs for which they were overqualified. Sometimes people need the MONEY (a guy who got laid off from another job and has to pay child support won’t necessarily leave as quickly as you think or someone out of school who doesn’t have the focus to figure out anything too soon) or the opportunity.

Heck, I’ve learned a LOT about real estate and associated industries just from working my relatively low-level job that a high school grad can do. It will serve me well in owning my own property and running a business the RIGHT WAY (I could shove Section 8 people in a place and still get paid or I could provide a solid living experience and build a reputation for quality—this is the kind of ‘dilemma’ these companies face.)

In any case, when I felt I was overqualified and would depart, I would always tell people that getting me for six months or a year was better than having someone else for a much longer term. In fact, there was a case of the exact same thing happening. I was going to be just an office manager in downtown DC. I was apparently not content with just being an office manager for the next 10-15 years (though I didn’t say that) and they hired a guy who would show up to work in unprofessional attire and was eventually discovered to have been involved in abuse of the institute’s company credit card (along with the hiring manager—so hey, maybe that explains that.) They WOULD have been better off getting me for half a year than that a-hole.

For my part, as a manager, I don’t want someone who is necessarily satisfied with a lower-level job for too long unless it’s someone who draws contentment from their family or is a parent only supplementing the income from the larger breadwinner.
