The strategic region in question is not much bigger than a suburban subdivision outside Denver.

To give up the Golan Heights is suicide.

Why don't the Muslims cede lands that they have occupied via the belligerence of jihad?

A last ditch, desperate effort to stave off the inevitable war this summer.
Syria will blow this off and that will be end of Olmert.

In proportion to the size of Israel it is critical strategic depth.

Annex Syria. Everyone would be better off. Especially the Syrians.

I guess like Sharon, Olmert doesn’t realize the personal risk he’s taking by making that offer. Rudy Giuliani didn’t get it with the lightening bolt the other night either. Act in haste, repent in leisure. I know, I’m just old-fashioned, but I tend to take shots across my bow as a warning, not a green light to forge ahead.
To: GovernmentIsTheProblem
The size of the place isnt so important. I am not an expert, but I think they call it the Golan Heights because it is high. If Given to Syria,I believe the Syrians would be looking down on Israel. I believe we can assume they would arm the place with weapons that could be fired down on Israel. I imagine that is why Israel ran the Syrians off it years ago. So IMO ,the question is why give it back so they can shoot down on you again when the mood strikes them.

So? "Strategic" doesn't begin to express how important this little piece of land is. It's the high ground between Syria and Israel, and the obvious defensive perimeter.
Friend of mine was in Israel awhile back (working for a defense contractor). They visited the Golan, and he said you could lob a shell almost anywhere into the north half of Israel from the Golan. And when the Syrians had it, that's what they did.

Exactly. It's a high plateau with a sharp dropoff on the west side, towards Israel.
Israel's defensive positions and surveillance equipment are located just to the east of the crest of the plateau.
