The single family homes are in a traditionally Black working class to lower middle class community. There is some upper middle class housing nearby. As I noted, not a particularly bad area. The rail station at LBJ and Central primarily serves a couple of TI facilities, I believe there is a shuttle to the medical center across Central as well.

There is a really rough pocket about 3 stations south of there.

North of the Village. (The village is south of Northwest Highway - this is a few miles up Greenville.) More the Hamilton Park area. Working class black neighborhood, post WWII housing. Not particularly bad. (And a lot better than the Vickery/5 Points area mentioned by Mr.L., which lies between this area and the Village.

This area is basically across LBJ from TI.

I stand corrected. I remember Hamilton Park now. Been there several times. Pretty decent neighborhood, actually.

I still stay in contact with a friend who lives on McShann, which is (or was) occupied almost exclusively by wealthy blacks.

Cashier checks are way to easy to copy. I sold a new $1500 computer on Ebay and shipped UPS COD/Cash Certfied. Got the check back from the bank as it was totally bogus wrote on a bank name that was bought by another bank. The address was fake as were the bank ID number. UPS said sorry, but they did their part.

So, now I no longer accept Cashiers Checks as they may not be worth the paper they are written on.

And if he gets into an accident with no insurance are you liable? Send a notice of transfer of title to the state as soon as possible!

Ebay has bid insurance so that you can get your money back if the deal turns out to be fraud.

They refund your money and cancel the account of the seller.

They will also prosecute them.

“Define legitimate dealer.”

Duly licensed and regulated by the state. In Georgia, if a dealer fails to provide title within 30 days, the purchaser can return the vehicle to the dealer for a full refund.

Failure to perform results in revocation of the dealer license and serious fines.

Perhaps you folks in the tri state need to talk to your state legislatures to clean up these bogus dealers. Georgia did.

Don’t count on it!

Over the past 3 years I have done over 2000 transactions on Ebay with most of them good. This one was refuse because I dropped shipped so it’s the shippers responsibility. And I couldn't’t even file a police report.

Four others that I was shorted product on and had the USPS weight tags and the manufactures listed weigh of product to prove that the shipment was short. I wound up settling with Paypal for only 50% of the lose.

The remaining bad deals with sellers were ones that never shipped and those I only received 0% to 40%.

You are correct though that their EBAY accounts were close.

Nothing in life is guaranteed, including Ebay.

Actually the stolen motorcycle was in one of the most affluent neighborhoods in our area. A teenage kid bought the bike from another party (non-Craigslist, knowing it was hot, IMO), then listed on Craigslist for way more than it was worth even if legit. The high asking price and lack of registration stickers in the photos drew some LE attention. Yes, I know, stolen vehicles normally sell for a lot less than legit.

"The victim reached for a concealed weapon and was shot, ..."

Having a CCW doesn't guarantee that you will be faster on the draw, only that you at least have something to draw if you have to do so.  It also doesn't guarantee that you can hit what you shoot at.

It's sad that the young man didn't prevail.  My condolences to his family.

There are some no-win situations in life.

However, I have seen a number of videos both staged (a test) and real where a cop has a gun pointed at a criminal and the criminal draws and fires before the cop can react. Its even worse when the criminal has the gun out.

Action is faster than reaction, all things being equal.

I hardly suggested that there be some sort of legal ban on private transactions. Sure they CAN work, but the risks are pretty high, and a transaction that involves going to some random location to fork over a big wad of cash to a complete stranger is really asking for trouble. You can get a great price on a used car from a regular dealer if you pay in full up front and decline any sort of warranty — both steps you’d be taking with just about any private transaction. And yes, there are crooked used car dealers, but if they have an established placed of business and a local business license, you can FIND them when the car turns out not to be what was represented. They also aren’t in the habit of shooting their customers.

Person to person private sales of vehicles are best limited to situations where you have at least some prior knowledge of or connection to the other party — someone who works for your employer, somebody who belongs to your church, etc. I once sold a very cheap old used car to a guy who pumped gas at the gas station I’d been using regularly for a year. He wanted a junker to use for his morning newspaper distribution business, and the cash transaction (a whopping $300) was carried out at the gas station with other employees present.

As a CCW instructor that I know says, a concealed weapon ain't there so you can go places where you might need it. To the contrary, if you think you need a weapon to go somewhere, just don't go.

One carries a concealed weapon "just in case you don't need it."

Sorry this young man had to die as an example of this lesson.

So if someone goes to a dealership, test drives a car and doesn’t come back, it’s not technically stolen?

I don't know about the dealer case, but in this case that is what the info was. Maybe it was just the insurance. I wasn't exactly first hand to this incident.

"...if you think you need a weapon to go somewhere, just don't go."

Sound advice whether you're carrying or not.

(Unless you are a soldier fulfilling you're mission, that is.)

Glad they caught the guy. I hope they get the other one also. This was avery sad situation. The guy was trying to buy a car, and probably had no idea he was being setup...Obviously he didn’t or he would not have gone through with the trip.
