Maybe they didn't have the nerve to ask the question in the first place.

Get real. Anyone in the public eye that has ever employed an illegal alien is toast. Bush wouldn't be president if he *ever* had.

Here's a link to a story about the NY Police commissioner who was nominated by Bush for director of Homeland Security and had to withdraw because he had an illegal maid.

Don't you remember Kimba Wood, Clinton's second nominee for Attorney General that had to be withdrawn because of an illegal maid? She came right after Zoe Baird, who also had be be withdrawn because of an illegal maid.

Your generic rich person might hire an illegal because they don't live in the public eye. But Washington politicians just don't do it if they hope to be successful.

Maybe. But just because someone else got caught doesn't rule out the possibility. Actually, I'm beginning to think that just asking the question is as good as having the goods.

Do you recall any question posed to Bush (or McCain) like the one I'm asking? "Have you or your family hired illegals?"

It would raise suspicions. Just why are these elites so passionate about opening our borders, anyway? Are they pushing amnesty for aliens, or for themselves?

I disagree that your term "opening our borders" is what Bush is trying to do. But I agree with Bush that it needs to be done, and I don't have any kind of household employee whatever. I honestly believe that the proposed bill is superior vs. the status quo and no doubt Bush does to.

Besides, the idea that Bush would divide the Republican party, start a huge fuss, work at pushing a bill through congress, and get yelled at by so many of his (former) supporters just because he wanted to hire a illegal maid, just doesn't pass the laugh test.

I'm truly astonished at how much passion people can generate over an idea that at best will only keep the existing lousy situation in place.

We *KNOW* the existing situation stinks. Nobody knows for certian whether writeing new law will work or not. Why not have some guts and give it a try.

I suppose walking off a cliff might be a solution for a rattlesnake bite, why not give it a try? We know the rattlesnake bite stinks. It just takes some courage--LOL--wait a minute...that sounds like Bush's sound bite yesterday, urging Congress to screw their constituents. You've got the spin down.

Papacito works like a piston, for peanuts. You're not going to like the work ethic of his son, Mijo--but I used to work in the barrio, and probably you did not and didn't see how the culture works when unassimilated. The first generation is servile, the second generation learns resentment and joins gangs.

So you just don't like Mexicans. Ok. I get it.

You have all the Bush spin down! I guess you didn't want to notice the word "unassimilated."

Like I said, it's the Atticus Finch syndrome.

When I was in El Paso, I knew a lot of newly American folks who did it the hard way, worked through the system, and were particularly contemptuous of Nice Anglo Women (maybe the Bush wives?) who took advantage of black market labor. It was regarded (during those Carter years when we didn't have a scofflaw president) as a tacky and exploitative thing to do.

So I think it's a fair question to ask of Mr. and Mrs. McCain of Arizona--"Have you ever employed illegal aliens?"
