i can’t remember knowing a left-handed woman, altho’
i suppose i must have and forgot.
I had the same experience. My first grade teacher tried to “convert” me to right-handedness. My parents put a stop to it. I am the only leftie in my family of which I’m aware. Husband and kids are all righties, siblings and parents also, and, if I am not mistaken, also all my grandparents. I am the aberration. I also never learned to hold a pencil right, although my problem is that I grasp the pencil with the thumb, middle and ring fingers and the index finger sort of floats around above the fray. I don’t remember ever writing back-handed, probably because I had a principal who took me on as a sort of project where I went to his office each day to practice writing. He was quite proud when I won a school-wide penmanship contest a few years later in Junior High. (I found that I could write backwards easier than forwards, mostly because I didn’t have to drag my fist behind me.)
I’m left-handed also, and am very active. This study is so full of sh*t, it’s pathetic. The only women in this study were dutch. It also doesn’t say what their lifestyles were. Were they careful about their diet? Were they active? Did they abuse alcohol or drugs? Sometimes genetics plays a big role in predisposition of certain disease. It’s got too many holes in it. And I am a woman who’s thinking with her “right” mind.
Please tell me this study applies to women of the left too.
And I also defy anyone who’s right-handed to try and adapt to a left-handed world. It takes more dexderity, for a lefty, to live in a righty world. I work in my father’s wood shop on occasion, and I’ll tell you I use every single one of those right-handed only tools he’s got in there. Power tools are not left-hand friendly. I do take exception that this article insinuates that because I’m left-handed I’m mentally deficient. I’m done ranting now.
They tried to do that to me at school and my mom told them to leave me alone.
Handedness is interesting, but I don’t think it’s genetic.
I have mirror-image identical twins. They are genetically the same, but one is right-handed and one is left-handed. Of course, everything is the opposite on them. One got their first tooth on the right side, and the other the left side. One has a swirl on the right side of her hair, and the other has a swirl on the left side of the her hair.
I don’t know how mirror-image twins happen, and I don’t know how left-handedess happens.
I can’t compare IQs with my daughters because the right-handed twin has brain damage that has affected her speech and memory. I do know that both of my daughters are gifted at math. The both score somewhere between 95-99% on all standardized math tests. My husband, my son, and I are all very good at math. So it seems that runs in the family.
So am I an so is my brother. That really had them scratching their heads. At least they didn't try to force me to write, right handed like they did him.
Lefties tend to have more injuries since the world is right-handed. Perhaps the disease aspect is due to stress from being in a right-handed world. OTOH, lefties are a little quicker, possibly a compensation for living in a mirror world.
I really enjoy having ejected shells hit my forehead.
Regarding IQ, when I was in National Honor Society in high school 20+ years ago, we once took a survey to see how many were left-handed. Almost half amongst those polled were. I felt quite vindicated, since I grew up an anomaly in my family. My mother was always looking for a relative to "blame" for my left-handedness, as if it was something to be ashamed of.
The brain is bicameral with some functions on the left and some on the right. To a degree this would affect some motor functions, although vision seems to be evenly distributed. Hearing is not quite evenly distributed, with some interpretation of speech going on on one side. If you hold the telephone to your left ear you will be susceptible to sales spiels; if to the right ear you will be able to perceive BS and be very skeptical.
On the plus side, they are more likely to survive a stroke.
Bingo baby - You can probably also write upside and backwards, try it. Your spatial perception is more open. Had a teacher once who commented that my reverse writing was better than forward. Think Michelangelo
Most left handedness is the result of brain damage. (Yes - I am brain damaged)
The "damage" is not significant enough to be recognized in normal activities.
See my prior post - the leftie is also probably "brain damaged", but not in a way that reduces everyday functioning. Math is a special thinking task. There are certain people among us to which it is logical - math just makes sense. Right or Left - doesn't matter.
Here's a simple test - are you supposed to be right or left handed? Put your thumbs together - tip to tip. One nail will be wider. The one that is wider indicates which handedness you were "supposed" to be.
You bat right - throw left? Mixed dominants.
Bowling - my biggest problem was trying to figure out which foot to step out with.
If you are a parent with a mixed dominant child - get them into a physical activity that requires using both sides of the body - ballet or, my personal preference, martial arts. You will never regret it and your child will appreciate your efforts on their behalf.
Haven’t tried upside-down writing but my spatial perception is pretty accurate. And once I slip into backwards writing, I don’t have to think about it any more than I would think about writing forwards. I guess my brain just sort of flips with the hand. I wish I could say I was good at art but although I can do technical graphic art designs, the emotions are just not supportive of good visual artistic expression.
Thank you doctor for standing up to this kind of baloney.
This is just anecdotal - emotions may be problematic. They are for me. Might be an area we need to work on.
But do try upside down and backwards. You may be surprised and have a little fun :-).
Will do. Upside-down and backwards.
