“Liberals like Frank and Chait assume that what most Americans want from politics is a modest improvement in their lives: Affordable health care, retirement security, good schools for their children. Under this paradigm, voters should prefer a politician whose life experience has taught him how difficult it can be to get by without such staples. The fake populist is maddening because he professes to understand their concerns but has zero life experience (or at least recent life experience) that would make such understanding possible.”
These people are completely clueless. The problem is that there are still a LOT of us who simply want the government to get the he— out of our way and let us take care of ourselves (This includes or family, friends and neighbors). We resent the elitist assumption that the average American is incapable of running his life and emerging victorious over life’s obstacles without the intervention of “Big Mama” government. To us, those who understand and respect that have populist appeal, no matter what their financial station. Those who insist on arrogantly posing as some odd combination of our mother and father are ELITIST, no matter what their financial station.
It all boils down to whether someone trusts the average American’s ability to engage in self government, or do they insist on pandering to us by treating us like children.

Ahh, a steaming "gift" from Salt River. How quaint that the liberals over there go to a liberal rag like
New Republic for their hit pieces.
I wonder what Howard Dean's WA name is.

Barbour, for his part, employed a variant of this diversionary strategy by using coded racial messages to court downscale whites. Here we go again. Whenever Republicans win in the South, some RAT attributes their success to campaigning in "racial code."
What a twit.
