That was in Singapore, and it was an American kid
Works for me.
I remember the American kid, (that was the point, the libs here were horrified that some poor American kid who really had a good heart, just got caught up in some car vandalism was going to be caned), but I was wrong on Singapore.
They did do the caning, right? Did the state dept ever step in here and object? I don’t remember the aftermath of it.
Vigilante? I think the city should give him health insurance and pay for his ammo!
*chuckle*
Excellent.
If the NY Times is against it, I’m for it.
“U.S. President Bill Clinton called the punishment prescribed by Singapore as extreme and mistaken, continuing to pressure the Singaporean government to grant Fay clemency from caning. Two dozen U.S. senators signed a letter to the Singaporean government also appealing for clemency. After Fay’s punishment was carried out, the United States Trade Representative said that he would try to prevent the World Trade Organization’s first ministerial meeting from taking place in Singapore.”
“Following Fay’s sentence, the case received wide coverage by the U.S. media and dozens of reporters were sent to Singapore to cover the case.[1] The New York Times had several editorials and op-eds that condemned the punishment and called the American public to flood the Singaporean embassy in the United States with protests.”...
“Public opposition of the caning within the United States was uncertain as opinion polls produced by different news organizations contradicted each other. Nevertheless, a significant number of vocal Americans were in favor of the caning, reasoning that Singapore had a right to use corporal punishment if it chooses, or that their own country did not mete out severe enough punishment to criminals. The Embassy of Singapore received numerous calls strongly supporting Fay’s punishment.”
I know rabbits....and that ain’t no rabbit.
Not.
I hate it here in L.A. I used to be a custodian. Between cleaning caca off the walls, graffiti, caca in the sinks, caca in the urinals... I once had to clean up after the kids set up an alter to satan in one bathroom.
You folks out there have no idea... :-(
altar. Sorry.
Not sure about caning, but some sort of public humiliation could be a powerful disincentive.
Why did they ever get rid of the Public Stocks?
I went to middle and high school in and around LA in the '80's. I have a little bit of an idea.
When are you escaping? 8^)
I was at a Bush appearence several years ago, and there were some hippie protesters there. One of them, a really dirty looking girl, was screaming that we were bombing Iraqi babies.
So I yelled back at her Yes! And then we are bombing Syria, then France, and then Hollywood!
The others had to hold her back, I really thought she was going to hit me.
2. Public caning or locks & stocks at heavy foot-traffic area on weekend
3. 1 month at labor camp offence 1, 2 years offence 2
I don’t take up much space but when I do, I’m sure an illegal will take my place. Bellflower is full of them.
When I have the money and opportunity. My wife still works for the district, she’ll leave in a couple of years.
