IF GWB claims to have deported 5.2 million, why can't he deport the rest? Only 7 million to go, by his calcucations...

Of course, since he has completely failed to keep out the floods of illegals (while putting down citizens and pandering to Mexico), it's no big deal for anyone who's deported to come back in a month or so.

In my opinion, you're the one that needs to "get a grip" on his derelection of duty.

As per the earlier link provided, it was Edwin Meese, looking back on the Reagan administration who said that that was a mistake.

It was not RR, who said it, since he did not see the results of the bill he signed.

He was concerned about employer's who would take advantage of the poor who couldn't speak for themselves. RR signed the bill with his eye on enforcement of the law and the border and the rest was compromise My profound apologies. I stated it as I remembered it, but my memory is apparently wrong. Now I know how Scooter Libby feels.

Because that's not necessary. The fine would solve the problem.

If you want to argue the libertarian side, fine. I'm there with you on most issues. But there's nothing libertarian about dumping 20 million people onto the welfare rolls, letting taxpayers pay for guest worker insurance, and putting pensions of displaced workers on the taxpayers to boot. That's what happens when you open the borders wide.

I just don’t want our wages undercut by a flood of cheap labor. And I don’t want millions more empowering government by getting on the welfare and public health wagon. The cheaper labor is only really cheaper for the employer. The rest of us pay in the form of taxes.

Lived it. The legislation, as was all the crappy legislation, was negotiate with the budge as the leverage, and Dems controlled both houses. The promise was that this would be the legislation to end all the immigration problems, sort of like we will never raise your taxes.

As for Reagan he said any country that can not control its borders is not a country. He ran on the issues of the 55 mph insanity of Carter and to abolish the Department of Education. He accomplished one of two.

Most don't remember that his famous tax cut was forced on him by Jack Kemp. he tried to hold out for a smaller cut, but the finally agreed on a 10% a year for three years. They touted that as a 30% cut which is not accurate but look like it is a real 30%.

I find it hard to believe that you do not have issues with the failure of GWB to enforce the immigration laws, fine employers who hire illegals, secure BOTH borders and deport the millions of illegals not to mention, apprehend & deport the HALF MILLION ILLEGALS WHO ARE FELONS!

Very good points. I don’t want a return to slavery — I want illegal immigrants to work towards citizenship and become productive members of our society. See the difference now? If not, please re-read the 13th and 14th Amendments to the Constitution.

We have already returned to slavery.

Illegal aliens are criminals - people willing to break our laws to get what they want - and should never be allowed to become citizens.

I would suggest that you consider one shocking item: Most don't want to be American citizens. They are colonizing the southwest for Mexico.

In the end, President Bush cannot enforce the current law; how would President Bush enforce a new law?
