If I remember CIA’s reasoning, Atta’s cell phone was in use during his trip to the Czech Republic. According to the CIA that was proof that Atta never left the States. It never occurred to the CIA that Atta might not have taken his cell phone with him to Europe.

But what bothers me the most, why is the CIA against US interests? The Plame/Wilson Affair concerns me greatly. Why did Tennant demand an investigation? Why didn’t the Republican Senate and House get to the bottom of the CIA corruption when they had the opportunity? I cannot get around the fact that the CIA committed treason against the WH during a time of war. It is appalling, but mostly is scares the heck out of me.

I tend to agree with you that the Agency was working against the WH after 9/11. You left out the publishing of the book, "Imperial Hubris," during the runup to the 2004 election.

IMO the Agency lashed out because it felt that it was being unfairly scapegoated for the intelligence failures that led to 9/11. Also, they were not onboard as an institution with the decision to invade Iraq.

Yes, I left out a few rogue CIA incidents. As an employer of the Agency, it is not its job to lash out against a WH as it sees fit. It is not its job to impose its view on the populace during a national election, whether it be through the publishing of a book, an editorial in the NYT or leaks of “black” prisons. What is frightening the Executive and Legislative Branches have lost control of it. It is rogue. It is unaccountable.

All true to a point. As someone who was a government bureaucrat for 36 years, including being at the Senior Executive level, the dirty little secret is that the careerists, for the most part, run the USG. The thin veneer of political appointees are not there long enough to change the corporate culture or make significant institutional changes. Each government agency has its own unique organizational identity. Turf issues transcend policy concerns. The status quo is to be preserved at all costs. Any external criticism directed at the organization or an individual is seen as an attack against all. Leaks to the MSM and the opposition party are the weapons of choice.

The solution is to change the current rules that insulate careerists from being fired except in the most extraordinary circumstances. Hell, the President is having a problem even firing political appointees at the Justice Department.

Exactly. To this day, the Czechs maintain that it was Atta who met with al-Ani. Moreover, we have confirmed that large deposits "mysteriously" showed up in Atta's accounts shortly thereafter.

In the movies, it's always the "peace loving" president who is at risk of being taken out in a coup by the CIA. In real life, the CIA appears to be working to keep us from winning. That said, some of the people who know the CIA, such as the author of "the Cell," claim that we are getting good, qualified people inside the CIA, but that they are 5-10 years away from being effective "in country" insertions.

“Moreover, we have confirmed that large deposits “mysteriously” showed up in Atta’s accounts shortly thereafter.”

Is there a published source for this very interesting tidbit? I was unaware of this fact.

‘The solution is to change the current rules that insulate careerists from being fired except in the most extraordinary circumstances.”

This may be the solution. The Executive Branch may also robustly prosecute “leaks” to newspapers. The leaks about “black” prisons was damaging IMHO. I would also have energetically prosecuted the “Swift” leaks (not a CIA leak to the best of my knowledge). It seems certain “careerists” have big heads and poor judgment to the detriment of national security. And they are unaccountable to the country. That needs to stop.

Yah, but I can’t remember where it is, I’ve read so many books on this. It could be in Peter Lance’s books, “10,000 Years for Revenge,” or in “The Cell.” Sorry.

The anti-bush/war/military side will continue to do everything in their power to keep the American public as well as others from connecting the dots. Con artist are plentyfold. Men with solid credentials to lead this country are few.
