Gonzales is a perfect example of why using race as the primary consideration is a bad idea.

Somebody is going to get caught in the perjury trap if they keep talking.

I think that's the point. The president had the right, even the responsibility, to fire the attorneys if they weren't carrying out his policies, which people voted for by electing him. But if a firing squad of democrats and republican co-conspirators ask enough questions, they could trip anyone up. Then scream perjury in a hearing room full of salivating democrats.

The AG serves at the President's pleasure too, so Mr. Bush must be happy with the shoddy work Gonzo is doing! Too bad neither one of them has a clue as to what the American folks really want-that being secure borders, ship the illegals back to their home, and a workable green card solution-and until they react accordingly, I see nothing but trouble lurking for both of them from the dimwits in the House and Senate. I only wonder why the Feds didn't go after Sen. Schumer on the stealing of the personal information of the guy in Maryland that ran for the Senate. Wasn't that a violation of federal laws? If so, why did Chuckie skate on it? He was in charge of the dimwits' Senate campaigns wasn't he?

Yep, like several Scooter Libby jurors who said they wished it were Karl Rove on trial. What chance did Scooter have with that jury?

Iglesias was quite close to the Pillsbury Dough Governor. I don't know how thin Iglesias' "Republican" credentials are, but Bush's bipartisan streak has lead him to make appointments that would at least mollify Democrats.

And, as we know with Souter, a presidential appointment is not made with perfect information.

The last I read on it what Gonzales said was that he didn't recall any meetings and it turns out he had attended two meetings in which it was discussed over the course of two years.

That's not what Sampson said today. He said it was a topic of daily discussion in the DoJ. What I don't understand is why Gonzales would have been untruthful about something so minor.

Exactly. If he had any smarts, he would have just told the truth and let the Dims stew in frustration.

Oh well. Shoulda coulda. Now he (and unfortunately we, because Gonzales blunder has put a spring in the Dims' steps) must live with the consequences.

Iglesias was the Republican candidate for New Mexico Attorney General in 1998, when he lost narrowly to Democrat Patricia Madrid (who in turn lost narrowly to Heather Wilson, in a 2006 race for Congress). The guy has been prominent in New Mexico Republican politics for some time.

He may have wanted to be prominent in NM politics again. This certainly gives him cred among both Democrats and Maverick-lovers. Despite this, he is bestest buds with Monica's pimp, right?

"The last I read on it what Gonzales said was that he didn't recall any meetings and it turns out he had attended two meetings in which it was discussed over the course of two years."

That's part of Gonzales' problem right now. Either he wasn't in charge or much aware of the the firing of 8 of his staff or he was more informed than he led on. It makes no sense why he would lie here. He has every right to fire them at his discretion why would he claim he wasn't deeply involved in their all being let got the same day? All he had to say was, "I decided they were no longer needed."

Ok, Gonzales needs to confess he attended meetings but he wasn't paying attention because he was doodling.

What makes you think he was appointed based on race?

Based on his performance, it's quite obvious.

It doesn't make any sense to me.

He's behaving as though the firing of the attorneys was somehow shameful or wrong, distancing himself from the decision and pretending that he had no part in it.

Not only does this embolden the Dems, his untruthfulness turned a non-event into a legitimate scandal.

He has to go. Now.

No question that his appointment (like the hands off border policy) was aimed at wooing hispanics.

You actually believe the President would do that?
