"You get people who join up because of problems in their life"

What a load of crap!! My 2 older brothers got drafted for Nam back in the late 1960s and they/we had problems.

So if you get drafted you don't have problems? This old goat should be put out to pasture.

Slavery comes in many flavors, including the draft.

Andy Rooney has long outlived his usefulness to the country or to himself. It may be time to leave him dribbling and drooling at the nearest dog track.

Who cares what that dried up old prune has to say about anything. Every time he opens his mouth, he just shows what a stupid old fool he is.

our country lost something when it did away with the draft

While I think A.R. is an out-dated wind-bag, I too see some advantage in having the draft, namely, it would help some young fatherless males learn to be men in a time when far too many males have no masculine role models.

I totally disagree. Our current armed forces are professionals, and very good at what they do. We don't need to turn them into some social agency - esp. since our gov't has never figured out how to have a successful social agency.

You are absolutely right. Better to fix the lack of male examples in some other way. Would be good if we could somehow fix the school system .. fat chance, however.

A draft only results in sending people somewhere against their will, to a place that they do not want to be, and as a result they will not do a good job while they are there.

Nothing increases the production of goldbricks like unwanted, compulsory servitude.

While modern standards would most likely weed out the Zeroes, there would still be all those thousands of Beetle Baileys.

"It doesn't produce the best Army"? Has he looked at our Army lately? They are the best in the world. We do need to increase our numbers though. Especially since Mrs. Bill Clintons husband cut us from 20 divisions to 10 divisions.

Do you remember the program that some had in mind to recruit retired military to teach and coach in the schools? I really wanted that one to move ahead. That would help the vets, and what better source of male role models could there be?

1st-I joined 7 months before graduating(DEP)so getting or not getting a job had nothing to do with it. But what's really sad was when I was a Ft. Benning I read about 3 of Rooney's books and enjoyed them at the time. Now THAT was a waste.

The problem liberals have, comparing draftees to volunteers, is that they don't understand the concept of people doing something just because it's right.

In peacetime, you might plausibly argue that many young people enlist to find economic opportunity. However, we have been at war for several years now, and the recruits are all being told that they can expect to fight.

This means that they are all heros (using the real definition of the word). That is, they all chose great risk for themselves, in order to protect others. An army of heros will always be better than an army of conscripts.

Draftees are made up of a variety of people, many will prove to be good soldiers, but many others are cowards, and cowards are worth less than nothing in an army.

Andy Rooney is the product of a handjob on a hot rock in August.

Rooney had a distinguished record as a Stars and Stripes correspondant during World War 2,

...well gee, then he must know all there is to know about military life after lugging his typewriter all over Europe and Asia. I hear that those paper cuts are brutal.... and the hemorrhoids from sitting on yer a## can be quite uncomfortable...

Don't remember that one. Sounds like a good idea that the NEA would have a hissy fit about: military, non-union, who cares about the kids.
