When my cousin was in Iraq in 03 and the Cubs were in the playoffs he wrote this to the tune of I'll Be Home For Christmas.
I'll be home for the world series
You can plan on me
Please no snow and Go Cubs Go
And Victories at Wrigley
Game 1 will find me in a Cubs fan dream
I'll be home for the world series
If Only in My dreams
Unfortunately the Cubs didn't make it but Mike did make it home and just became a first time dad last week.
Ironically I'm up because I'm too excited to sleep because I live for spring training in a few hours.
All baseball fans should get a copy of Terry Cashman's CD Passing it On From Father to Son.
One song always gets to my husband who played college baseball which is "Good Enough to Dream" He was considered a prospect until he ruined his knee his sophomore year. The song is basically about the players who maybe are a bit shy of being major leaguers. He now coaches little league and works with his high school alma matter.
I remember watching that game on TV.
That was my mom's birthday and I remember we were eating her birthday cake and watching the game.
Baseball and football too is something I could always talk to my Dad and my stepdad about even when we were going through tough times in our relationship.
On April 9th for the 32nd time I will be going to opening day with my Dad at Wrigley Field.
I remember rushing home from school to catch the last few innings of the Cubs game and listening to Jack Brickhouse.
I remember going to my bachelorette party in 1998 in a skybox at Wrigley and picking a very lucky day because it wsa the day Kerry Wood struck out 20.
I got to meet Ronald Reagan in 1988 because I was working for the Cubs when he visited Wrigley.
Did you all know that George Will had it at one time in his ABC contract he can wear head to toe Cubs regalia the first show after they win the world series?
Also Billy Peterson has it in his CSI contract the week of the world series off if the Cubs are in it as well as Gary Sinise.
Great story about Dodger Blue. Thanks for the reflections
Maury Wills played in Spokane before moving up to the bigs. His first year he and his family rented a house across the street from my Grandma's house. Awesome base-runner.
The Dodgers came up for a couple of exhibition games. Sold out the stadium and then some. Never forget seeing Duke Snider playing out there in center field.
Baseball - the thing dreams are made of.
Spokane is the hometown of my favorite player of all time. Ryne Sandberg.
Great anecdote, cubbies fan....;^)
I have yet to catch a spring training game on TV... I like those, too. They're so relaxed.
Many is the serious college player who aspired to go to "The Show," maybe only went for a "cup of coffee," but went. I understand how that was for your hubby... I've known many like him who came SO close.
Last but not least, very good news about your cousin, to whom we are grateful. God bless him and his new family.
Duke Snider was my FAVORITE of that era. Great player, great guy, ended up being an avocado farmer further south in CA.
Wrigley and baseball - what a great combination.
Never been there but it's on my list of things I like to experience.
Ryno grew up in my old neighborhood and my nephew played Little League with him. Lotsa great memories.
George Will is a deep-dyed baseball fan, I know! He's written about baseball too, I think for the New Yorker.
Didn't know about Sinise, who continually rises in my estimation of him, but knew he was from Chi-town.
Opening day!! What excitement. It's always around my birthday, too.
Great memories there, Cubbies fan!! Wrigley is the best.
Enjoy opening day with your Dad. 32 opening day games together. Outstanding.
Wow - a fan after my own heart. I can't wait for opening day for the Texas Rangers. It's a work holiday so I can get there early. I have 4 good tickets and can't find anyone to come with me. I've been known to go alone. Baseball, I love you too.
Wish I were there to help you out with using those tickets.
We would have a rip-roaring time, guaranteed.
